However, some visitors note that elk sightings are not guaranteed, and occasional issues with restroom availability can detract from the experience.
"Big beautiful park area with a 7.7 mile loop for a long walk this weekend. The trail was nice with great views of water and forest. Started and ended at the Elk trail head and the walk took about 3.5 hours. Wish there were more side off trail trails to take and that the bathrooms were working but otherwise I definitely will go back. I think bringing my bike would be the best thing for this place but great for picnics too. Only one hour from Chicago where I live."

Understanding the Elk
Visitors often share their experiences of seeing the elk, with some lucky individuals getting relatively close views, while others report driving by for weeks without spotting them. This unpredictability is part of the allure for many. The enclosure is designed to mimic their natural habitat as much as possible, providing them with space and forage. Remember to maintain a respectful distance and avoid any actions that could stress the animals.
If your primary goal is to see the elk, consider visiting during the quieter hours of the day, such as early morning or late afternoon. These times often coincide with when the elk are more active and visible. Patience and a bit of luck are your best companions when seeking out these magnificent creatures.
Exploring the Trails
For those seeking a more rugged and immersive experience, unpaved trails wind through the heart of the wooded areas. These natural paths offer a closer connection to the forest, with opportunities to observe smaller wildlife like deer and birds. Hikers and trail runners often prefer these routes for their varied terrain and quieter atmosphere. Some visitors have noted a desire for more off-trail exploration, but the designated paths ensure the preservation of the natural environment.
When planning your trail adventure, consider the type of activity you're interested in. Biking is best suited for the paved loops, while hiking can be enjoyed on either paved or unpaved surfaces depending on your preference for scenery and challenge. Always wear appropriate footwear, especially on the unpaved trails, and be mindful of other users to ensure a pleasant experience for everyone.
Picnicking and Recreation
Beyond picnicking, the park is a hub for various recreational activities. The 7.7-mile loop is a popular choice for a long walk or run, taking approximately 3.5 hours to complete. Many visitors recommend bringing a bike to fully appreciate the park's size and diverse landscapes. The free parking further enhances the accessibility for day-trippers looking for an outdoor adventure close to the city.
