Insider Tips

from TikTok, Instagram & Reddit

The furnace company at Hopewell Furnace largely utilized a cold blast furnace to produce iron from circa 1771 to 1883. This method of iron production required the use of charcoal to fuel the furnace, which was labor intensive and demanded an abundant supply of wood. During the Industrial Revolution, many in the iron industry changed their fuel source from charcoal to coke and coal. Coke and coal w...

Welcome to Hopewell Furnace National Historic Park! We visited in 2019 (before we moved to PA) and it was one of the highlights of our trip. So, when I learned they were celebrating the birthday of their Establishment Day, I decided another visit was due! It’s so beautiful there, and I love learning about life in early America. We got to try quill pen writing and observed wax stamping, coal making...

Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise Hopewell Furnace for its free admission, friendly and knowledgeable staff, and well-preserved historical buildings. The immersive experience of exploring the iron furnace, waterwheel, and colonial village is a major highlight. Some minor issues with signage legibility and non-functional audio tour buttons were noted, but these did not significantly detract from the overall positive and educational visit. Reddit

"Visited with my mom in September before the government shutdown. Entry is free. The staff were very enthusiastic and passionate about their jobs, and they answered all the questions we had. The gift shop is well-maintained and has a lot of items for such a small site. There is also a short video in the Visitor Center that gives a brief introduction to Hopewell Furnace.

Walking the historic village and learning what life was like for furnace workers was very interesting. The signs were very detailed (although some of the outdoor ones were a little dirty). As others have said, some of the buttons for the self-guided audio tours in the buildings didn't work, but it didn't detract much from our experience. And there's something about seeing a 22-foot diameter waterwheel in motion! Pictures don't do it justice.

Last but not least, I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of wildlife and native plants in the surrounding forest. (French Creek Preserve surrounds Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site.) There is also a small pollinator garden, planted and maintained by Master Gardeners, outside the visitor center."

Pixie Rolleston

"We spent a very nice day at the historical site. The park rangers and volunteers were friendly and very informative. We participated in the molding demonstration and cast a miniature stove door (out of plaster instead of iron) and learned the process that was used for making the full size version out of iron.

The colonial village has been restored and was interesting to explore. With no entry fee, you can't beat the price."

"A well preserved historical site which anyone can visit. The welcome center is one of the best I have seen among the many. Everyone there is very friendly, knowledgeable and welcoming. Definitely do the activities for National park ranger badge . Pro tip, it’s not only for kids , grown ups can also do it . Many preserved buildings and artifacts. The main building is so well preserved with Piano , dining spaces , kids toys , rocking chairs etc . I would also recommend to watch the 15 minutes movie at the welcome center which tells you about the history of this place in detail. Would definitely recommend this place ."
