What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
San Elijo State Beach Campground is a highly sought-after destination, praised for its incredible beachfront location, stunning sunsets, and convenient access to local amenities. While the noise from nearby train tracks and the natural conditions of the beach (seaweed, rocks) are noted drawbacks, most visitors find the overall experience to be exceptional and well worth the booking effort.
"Most of the beach sites are good anything along the fence line. Your going to hear the dam train and crossing bells all night.
I stayed in site 90 it's big enough. But close to the rail road crossing . The bells woke me up more than once over the weekend.
Bathrooms are clean, it's across the street from any type of service you might need. I do like the campground alot."

"Sites are pretty big. Restrooms were clean. Showers are coin operated and you get the coins in exchange for cash at the front office station. I used 12 coins for like a 10-15 minute shower.
The beach is down the old wooden stairs. I did not like going down and back up all those stairs while carrying my beach equipment. Be careful in the water, there are big rocks everywhere once you get in deep enough, it doesn't feel safe. There is A LOT of sea grass, kelp, and seaweed everywhere and it smells bad. There isn't very much beach either cuz the water comes up very high. Honestly I'd give the beach 4/10 and the campsite 9/10.
At night it's noisy from the city, so if you're camping in a tent it's harder to sleep (if you're in an RV it's fine)."
Susanna Holden
"Great place to camp near the beach. You almost always need a reservation to camp here, but you can walk in and check it out any time (but don't walk through people's campsites). About a quarter of the camp sites are on the beach side, but all are easily walkable to the beach, by stairs or by a ramp. Camp sites have a picnic table & fire pit. Most sites are big enough to park an RV plus have a few tents and/or pop-ups or canopies. There are often lots of rocks and seaweed at the beach, but that varies by season and moment. There are public bathrooms and showers, but the showers operate by tokens only. This is a really great place to camp overall and fun for families, too. Sunsets to die for!"

Beach Access and Conditions
Despite these conditions, the overall appeal of camping right on the coast is undeniable. The proximity to the ocean means you're treated to spectacular sunsets and the soothing sounds of the waves. It's a place where you can truly immerse yourself in the coastal environment.
Campground Life: Noise and Comfort
However, a recurring point of feedback is the proximity of some campsites to the train tracks. The sound of passing trains and their crossing bells can be disruptive, especially for light sleepers or those in tents. While the campground enforces quiet hours starting at 10:00 PM, the train noise is an external factor. Despite this, many visitors find the overall experience, including the stunning ocean views and the vibrant atmosphere, to be well worth the potential for some nighttime noise. It's a trade-off that many are willing to make for the privilege of beachside camping.
Exploring the Surroundings
