Embrace the Cold, But Pack Smart

Fairbanks temperatures can plummet, so layers are key! Think thermal base layers, fleece mid-layers, and a waterproof/windproof outer shell. Don't forget a warm hat, gloves, and waterproof boots. Many visitors note that while the hot springs are warm, the air can be brutally cold, leading to frozen hair and eyelashes! TikTok+1

Reviews Summary

Chena Hot Springs offers a unique Alaskan experience, particularly its outdoor Rock Lake hot spring which is a highlight even in extreme cold. Visitors rave about the magical contrast of hot water and freezing air, and the potential for aurora viewing. However, some find the resort facilities to be dated and not as clean as expected, with mixed reviews on overall value. Reddit

"I really wanted to like Chena Hot Springs. I love the idea of spending a day relaxing in a natural hot spring. Unfortunately this hot spring and resort really missed the mark.

The facilities were small, smelly, and not well kept. The indoor pools were nothing much, the main attraction is definitely the outdoor natural hot spring which was unfortunately a bit grimy. The air is filled with the smell of sulfur (which is natural) but also there was a lot of moss and scum floating around in the water.

For being listed as one of the best hot springs/resorts in the US, it's really a shame as I had much higher expectations. I think the resort would have a lot of potential if it was cleaner, had better facilities and really had some time and money invested into it. As it exists today, it's worth skipping (especially being an hour drive outside of Fairbanks). People will need to have low expectations when they come here and they'll probably have a better time."

"Chena Hot Springs is such a magical experience—especially in extreme cold! The first time we visited, it was -40°F, and our hair and eyelashes froze instantly, making us look like winter creatures out of a fairytale. The outdoor pool is steaming hot, and sometimes you even feel a little too warm, which is wild given the freezing air around you. The shower and changing areas aren’t the most comfortable, but you move through them quickly just to get to that incredible warm water. Absolutely worth it!

If you stay at the resort springs are included in your stay."

"This is a unique 101-105 natural hot spring. It’s quite big. Smells a bit like sulfur, but not bad al all. The $18 gets you access to the big outdoor hot spring, the indoor pool, and the indoor hot tub.
It’s a very nice place for a quiet soak! They have day use lockers for $.50 per use.

The extreme cold, often dropping to -20°F to -40°F, creates a surreal landscape where steam billows from the hot springs, and your hair and eyelashes can freeze within minutes. TikTok+1 This dramatic contrast between the frigid air and the soothingly hot mineral water is what makes Chena so memorable. It's a place where you can literally see your breath turn into ice crystals while soaking in warmth. TikTokInstagram

Imagine dog sledding through snow-covered forests or witnessing the ethereal dance of the Northern Lights from the comfort of the warm water. TikTokInstagram The resort embraces the winter, offering a full spectrum of Alaskan adventure, making it a prime destination for those seeking an unforgettable cold-weather escape. TikTok

Understanding the Chena Hot Springs Experience: Expectations vs. Reality

Chena Hot Springs is often lauded as a top hot spring destination, but visitor experiences can be varied. The main draw is the outdoor Rock Lake, a large natural hot spring that remains comfortably warm even in extreme cold. TikTokInstagram However, some reviews mention that the facilities, including changing rooms and indoor pools, can be basic and not as meticulously maintained as one might expect from a high-end resort. Reddit The natural sulfur smell is also a common observation, which is typical for geothermal springs but can be off-putting to some. Reddit

Despite these points, many visitors find the unique experience of soaking in the hot springs while surrounded by snow and potentially under the aurora borealis to be absolutely magical and worth the visit. TikTokInstagram+1 The key is to manage expectations; it's a natural wonder with functional amenities rather than a luxury spa. Reddit For many, the sheer novelty and the breathtaking Alaskan environment more than compensate for any perceived shortcomings in the facilities. Reddit

Aurora Chasing from the Hot Springs

Instagram This dual experience—soaking in natural warmth while gazing at the aurora—is a bucket-list item for many travelers. TikTok While the aurora is a natural phenomenon and sightings are never guaranteed, Chena Hot Springs offers one of the most comfortable and unique vantage points from which to try and catch this breathtaking display.
