I took the reindeer walk weekend before last and loved it!! The staff is super knowledgeable!! They teach you some of the history of reindeer and how they are related to caribou!! The story of how this reindeer ranch started and got its name is definitely worth it going to visit for. Besides who doesn’t want to see baby reindeer!! (The little ones were super cute and their fur was sooo soft!) T...

Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise the Running Reindeer Ranch for its magical and unique experience, highlighting the knowledgeable and friendly staff who share fascinating insights into reindeer. The opportunity to walk with these curious animals in their natural habitat is a major draw. However, some find the price point high compared to other Alaskan activities, and note that not all reindeer may be present during certain times of the year.

"If you are looking to interact with reindeers then a petting zoo will be a better option at a fraction of the cost. Also, don’t visit for the next few weeks as 4-5 of their best reindeer are out for breeding and not at the facility.

The story telling was great and the staff were friendly and knowledgeable but we did not see the value of spending close to $100 per person for this activity compared to all the other things we did in Alaska. I would not recommend to anyone other than families with kids (as the kids seemed to enjoy it)"

"This was a great experience! Jane and her staff were both friendly, and knowledgeable about the reindeer and their history. When we were up in the forest, the reindeer did in fact run all together. It was amazing! Very unique creatures ❤️"

Lori Schrage

"This was beyond a unique and fun experience to get to walk freely with the reindeer frolicking around you ! Such a great time and the guides were both knowledgeable and made the tour fun ! The reindeer all had their own personalities and the younger ones were quite curious ! Highly recommend !"

The Unique Experience of Walking with Reindeer

The Running Reindeer Ranch offers a truly unique Alaskan adventure: a guided walk through the boreal forest alongside a herd of reindeer. Unlike a typical zoo encounter, this experience allows visitors to immerse themselves in the reindeer's environment. The animals are free-roaming and interact naturally, often curious about their human companions. Guides share insights into the reindeer's behavior, adaptations, and the ranch's conservation efforts, making it an educational as well as a magical experience. Instagram+1

Visitors often describe the reindeer as having distinct personalities, with younger ones being particularly playful and inquisitive. The guides, like Tyrone and Lauren mentioned in reviews, are passionate and knowledgeable, enhancing the storytelling aspect of the tour. This hands-on, educational approach is what sets the Running Reindeer Ranch apart, offering a deeper connection with these fascinating Arctic creatures. Reddit

While the cost is a consideration for some, the immersive nature of the walk and the personal connection with the animals are frequently cited as highlights. It's an opportunity to witness reindeer behaving as they would in the wild, a rare and memorable experience for many. InstagramReddit

Understanding Reindeer vs. Caribou

A common point of interest at the Running Reindeer Ranch is learning the distinction between reindeer and caribou. While often used interchangeably, there are subtle differences. Reindeer are the domesticated form of caribou, found in Eurasia, and are often smaller with shorter legs and a more rounded body. Caribou, on the other hand, are wild and found in North America, typically larger with longer legs and a more angular build. Instagram

The ranch's knowledgeable staff, like Jane and her team, are adept at explaining these nuances, along with the fascinating history of reindeer in Alaska. They share how reindeer were introduced to the region to support indigenous communities and their importance in Arctic ecosystems. This educational component adds significant value to the visit, transforming it from a simple animal encounter into a cultural and biological learning experience. InstagramReddit

Understanding these differences provides a deeper appreciation for the animals you encounter. The guides at the ranch are passionate about sharing this knowledge, making the experience both entertaining and informative for visitors of all ages. Instagram
