Hockey in Fairfax/NoVA/DC area
Moving to Northern Virginia soon, Fairfax area to be exact. How's the hockey? Also, best place to get skates sharpened/worked on? Please no Sparx machine recommendations, I like my skates super shallow. (In my experience, no one usually carries sparx wheels larger than 3/4)

Reviews Summary
Fairfax Ice Arena is a popular spot for public skating, lessons, and parties, with many praising the instructors and welcoming community. However, some visitors note that the rink can get crowded, and experiences with skate fittings and specialized services in the pro shop can be inconsistent. Despite minor drawbacks, it remains a go-to destination for ice skating enthusiasts in the DMV area.
"I skate here regularly because it's my nearest rink. The good: group lesson instructors are (mostly) fantastic and I appreciate that they usually have an assistant coach for larger class sizes. Admission for public skate is reasonably priced especially with the punch pass. The adult figure skating community here is very welcoming. The bad: it's a small rink so it's always crowded, even on weeknights; there are only three mid-week night public sessions that most 9-5 adults can go to. Freestyle sessions are only during working hours and are really expensive compared to other rinks in the area. Sharpening prices are quite steep if you request a specific sharpener and radius.
The fitter at the pro shop, Marlon, is well known and often recommended to skaters in the DMV (and they charge a fitting fee) but my fitting experience with him wasn't very thorough. I didn't get to try different brands and the only thing he did was measure my feet; no other modifications (eg baking) were offered and I still ended up in skates a half size larger than I needed. I was able to test the blade alignment during my follow up when my skates arrived, but I didn't get any feedback while doing so, which would have been appreciated as a more inexperienced skater who doesn't know what to look for in a proper fit/blade alignment. I won't be coming back here for my next pair."

"I came earlier today to get fitted after taking off from work and booking a week ahead. I was more than dissatisfied and disappointed by my experience. I was ignore by the fitted ( Marlon). He spent most of his time giving advice through the store associate.
I initially specified I wanted to get fitted by him in my appointment, instead he ignored me. I was intending to buy the skates I tried on, but after my experience i decided to take my money elsewhere.
I will honestly recommend to take your money elsewhere. It’s seems this rink has a special way of treating people."

"We had our child's 9th birthday party here, manager was great, we had a corner with semi open to public but it was perfect, we had so much room for guest, strollers, their things. Ordering food was easy, and if guest wanted something else they could go order themselves. Food was pricey outside of party. Gets crowded in the seating area, but overall staff was friendly and helpful. I would do another birthday party here.
I would suggest the ice skating buddy Handles for kids that never skated. Few tears and falls and fear. But overall everyone had a great time.
Rose was great as well!
Thank you!"
