"Because Mobile was secure and only blockaded, the Grand Hotel was set up as a hospital. The majority of soldiers here died of wounds received in the Vicksburg campaign. Unfortunately the record of burials was kept at the hotel and lost when it burned. This means a large number of soldiers are unknown. The site is well kept and beautifully done yet for me a somber site to visit."
