Reviews Summary
First Calvary Cemetery is a vast and historically significant site offering unique NYC skyline views and the resting places of many notable figures. While staff can be helpful in locating graves, some visitors have expressed concerns about inconsistent maintenance, including overgrown areas and sinking ground. Despite these issues, its historical depth and visual appeal continue to draw visitors.
"Update 12/19/24
I went to Calvary today and the headstone is sinking worse than ever. What is it going to take to remedy this situation? New pictures as of 12/19/24
Update 4/6/24
Went to cemetery on Easter Sunday to find the ground sinking again. Sent email, waiting on response. I am trying to get an answer as to why this is the only grave in the area to be sinking.
Update...received a call on December 27th after this review and another email that the area was finally filled in.
I am totally disgusted with this cemetery. They have stopped upkeep all together and everything is overgrown and it looks terrible. I have been trying for over a year to get my mother's grave filled in as the ground has sunk over a foot. I was originally told several times that someone would look at it and call me back, never happened. Now when I call no one answers and you can't leave a message. I can only assume the message queue is full with complaints. This is a total disgrace and I am sick over it. Btw, the last picture is a joke. They don't care at all about the condition of the cemetery. Still waiting to hear back on my multiple emails."

"Very helpful and thoughtful employees. I could not find the exact location of a relative’s unmarked grave despite having the coordinates. I called the main number while I was in the cemetery looking for it and the man who answered the phone immediately dispatched two workers who precisely located it for me. I am most grateful."

If you're visiting for genealogical research or to pay respects, be prepared for a potential treasure hunt. Comfortable walking shoes are essential, as you'll likely cover a lot of ground.
For those simply wishing to explore or enjoy the green space, the paved roads offer pleasant walking and biking paths. The juxtaposition of the serene cemetery with the bustling Manhattan skyline in the distance provides a unique and contemplative experience.
Visitor Experiences and Maintenance
However, a recurring theme in recent reviews points to concerns about cemetery maintenance. Issues such as sinking ground, overgrown vegetation, and a general lack of upkeep in certain areas have been reported. This inconsistency in maintenance can detract from the overall experience for those visiting loved ones' graves or simply seeking a well-ordered historical site. [^Review]
Despite these maintenance challenges, the cemetery's historical significance and the unique visual appeal of the NYC skyline backdrop continue to attract visitors. It remains a place of remembrance, history, and unexpected beauty, though potential visitors should be aware of the reported upkeep issues. [^Review]
