What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about the breathtaking golden aspen groves, calling it an 'enchanted forest' and a 'must-see' during fall. The challenging hike, especially with road closures, is considered worth it for the stunning scenery and peaceful atmosphere. Some find the hike difficult, particularly for less experienced individuals or younger children, and advise arriving very early to avoid crowds.
"If you are heading to see the aspens during the fall, this is a must see…. Definitely worth the hike but do note from the parking lot it is a good 1-1.5 hrs just to get to the trail head and another 20-30mins to the scenic aspens. Don’t expect to get out of the car and go around a couple of bends and you are there. Definitely a nice hike."

"Went last weekend, already yellow. Loved it but definitely challenging as there is no car access to get to trail, I was able to beat the crowds by going really early, saw the sunrise on the way to the trail about 3 miles then got to the beautiful enchanted forest with yellow trees in this season. I loved it and folded was 1 day trip on my way back saw a lot more people going up. Where it would be crowded, I think it was worth it for beautiful scenery and pics but it’s challenging for non experienced hikers, took my little sister (youth) and liked it but bc of the challenging way up wouldn’t do it again."

"We went early in the morning, got there by 9 and found the last parking spot. It was cold (mid October). We just missed all the beautiful fall colors but could tell it would have been stunning in it's full glory. The road up there is rough but we made it fine in our midsize SUV without four wheel drive."

📸 📸 Photography Tips
The entire Inner Basin is a photographer's dream, especially during fall. The dense groves of golden aspens are the main attraction. Look for sunbeams filtering through the leaves for magical shots. The 'aspen wonderland' section is particularly stunning.
Early morning or late afternoon (golden hour) offers the best light for photography, creating a warm glow on the aspens. Midday sun can be harsh, but the dense canopy provides some shade. Sunrise on the way to the trail can also be spectacular.
A wide-angle lens is great for capturing the expansive aspen groves and mountain scenery. A telephoto lens can be useful for isolating details in the trees or distant peaks. A tripod can help with low-light conditions, especially during sunrise or sunset.
The main challenge can be crowds during peak fall color season. The road closure also means a longer hike, so pack your gear wisely. Lighting can change quickly, so be prepared for varying conditions.
Drone usage in national forests is subject to strict regulations. You'll need to check with the Coconino National Forest and the FAA for current rules and restrictions regarding drone operation in this area. Generally, flying over sensitive areas or near wildlife is prohibited.
