What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise the charming goats and the informative, engaging house tours. The scenic trails offer a peaceful escape, though some note potential storm damage. Parking can be busy, and bringing water is recommended.
"I stopped by the house on July 3rd as part of my quest to visit all 100 counties. I was not expecting it to be quite so busy so early! I arrived even before the visitor's center was open.
I had researched before and knew there would be detours and limited sites at the actual house, but I wasn't expecting the hiker's lot to be full. That meant parking in the main lot which involves a steeper hike.
The hike, however, was still moderate, even in warm weather and once you are up the hill there are several other trails, outbuildings, the house itself (gift shop and exterior), a junior ranger stop where a short film plays, and the goats of course.
You can actually pet the goats but I recommend bringing your own biodegradable wipes and/or water for drinking and cleaning as those amenities are still limited.
I did see the shuttles around, but I didn't try to use them. I enjoyed my visit but should have climbed with my hiking pack and water."

"I enjoy visiting the goats that were raised by Carl Sandburg's wife and daughter. You can hike the trails, pet the goats, and brush them, making it a great experience for both children and adults. Dogs are welcome as long as they are on a leash, but they are not allowed in the barnyard with the goats.
The only admission fee applies to the house, so be sure to check the times, days, and cost for the guided tour of the home."

"While we didn't take a tour of the inside of the house, we did get to pet some baby goats, which our girls couldn't stop talking about. The babies were so cute, and I was impressed with the number of staff and volunteers on hand to take care of the place. Although they've had a fair amount of damage from Helene, this site is bouncing back. Check it out!"
