What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
St. Boniface Catholic Church is praised for its beautiful traditional architecture, including its stained glass windows and wooden altarpiece, and its welcoming congregation. Some visitors note that homilies can be family-focused, and there are observations about modernizations in worship practices.
"This church is very hateful and will NOT help anybody that has an emergency. They are rude and disrespectful."
Daniel Farmer (Chief Little Mouse)
"Don't expect any substantial theology or complex ideas to be addressed in a homily. Most homilies assume the congregation is only married individuals with families, and there are almost no events or organizations for those who have no kids and work during the day. About 3/5 Sundays there's good music with no guitars or "on angels wings" but only limited amounts of Latin used, and afterwards the congregation gets praised for how well they dealt with chanting or Latin. The priest often joins hands with the alter servers during the Our Father (majority of servers are girls) and most the congregation copies this behavior in the popular 1980's Protestant fashion.
The wooden alterpeice and stained glass windows are beautiful and accentuate the traditional basilica design magnificently, but many elements (like communion rails) have been almost completely removed. In fact only half the church actually approaches the front of the church during communion, instead having at least 8 eucharistic ministers through the church to expedite communion like checkout lines at Walmart.
Unlike some of the other catholic churches in fort smith, the tabernacle is properly situated front and center and the priest sits off to the side. While the pastor is celebrating mass there are no heretical homilies, off topic homilies, or irreverent homilies. Visiting priests are a mixed bag of entertainers that confuse Vatican with the reformation in 1510, and those who want to celebrate mass.
The congregation is friendly and welcoming to friends and strangers alike, and a majority arrive appropriately 10-15 minutes before mass begins. I infrequently see people sneaking out after communion or cutting the priest off during the recessional procession.
Overall a good church, even if usually wearing kid gloves when dealing with theology."

"The Church is beautiful. The people, priests, sisters and teachers come and go. So the spirits and personality of the Church is always living, growing and changing. That's good"

Theology and Homilies
For those seeking deeper theological discussions or specific organizational support for single individuals or those without children, it might be beneficial to inquire directly with the parish about available programs or resources. The church aims to provide relevant spiritual guidance, though the interpretation of 'relevance' can differ among congregants.
Music and Worship Style
However, there's a noted observation of the priest joining hands with altar servers during the 'Our Father,' a practice that some associate with Protestant traditions, which is then mirrored by a portion of the congregation. This blend of traditional and potentially newer worship styles can create a unique, albeit sometimes debated, liturgical experience.
Architectural Features and Renovations
However, some traditional elements, such as communion rails, have been significantly altered or removed. The distribution of communion involves numerous Eucharistic ministers positioned throughout the church to expedite the process, a practice compared to checkout lines at a retail store. Despite these changes, the tabernacle is appropriately situated front and center, a detail appreciated by those who value traditional Catholic church layouts.
