What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
The Gatlinburg Trolley is a free and convenient way to navigate the busy downtown area and reach attractions. While drivers are consistently praised for their friendliness and helpfulness, the system suffers from unreliable arrival times and occasional overcrowding, leading to frustrating waits for some routes.
"The trolley itself is fine, but the waiting and the arrival times, both on the app and the electronic board at the transit center, are why this only gets two stars. The drivers are friendly and helpful and the trolley is comfortable enough, with decent air conditioning even when it was really hot outside. The trolleys were pretty full and we had to stand multiple times because all the seats were taken. The worst part was the waiting at the transit center for a blue or yellow trolley to take us where we needed to go. Multiple times we waited much longer than anticipated, with the app and the arrival board showing multiple trolleys should have been coming but never arrived, and then the arrival times would change to later. I don’t know why this continued to happen but it would be a much better experience if the trolleys arrived anywhere close to when they said they would. The purple and red trolleys seemed to show up frequently, but if you’re waiting on blue or yellow, prepare to wait a long time!"

"I hate to rate this low, but I feel there is room for improvement. We used this service, as it was extremely convenient having a pickup right outside the hotel my family was staying at. The trolley we stepped on only had seats available in the rear. As I was sitting down on the seat, there was a metal cover that was WAY too hot to not be covered. I don't understand how it is ok to have the public the ability to touch it. Just a suggestion from a mother."

"The trolley system in Gatlinburg is free to ride, which is nice for getting around. Especially if you want to go from one end of downtown to the other, or go up to the national park, etc. The live map on the app can be a little off sometimes with arrival times & trolley locations, though. But, the drivers we had were all great, very nice & helpful. All in all, it's a great way to get off your feet for a while, take a ride, & see some sites."

Navigating Gatlinburg: The Trolley Advantage
While the trolley is a lifesaver, it's not without its quirks. Real travelers note that the real-time tracking app and electronic boards at the transit center can be unreliable, leading to longer-than-expected waits for certain routes, particularly the Blue and Yellow lines. Despite these potential delays, the drivers are consistently praised for their friendliness and helpfulness, often providing valuable local insights and information about destinations. The trolleys themselves are generally clean and offer decent air conditioning, making for a comfortable ride.
For those looking to explore beyond the immediate downtown area, certain trolley routes provide access to the outskirts of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, offering a convenient way to reach trailheads or scenic drives like the Roaring Fork Motor Trail without the hassle of finding parking within the park itself. This makes the trolley an essential tool for a more relaxed and enjoyable Gatlinburg experience, especially for those who prefer not to drive.
Understanding the Gatlinburg Trolley Network
Beyond the main downtown routes, specific trolleys can connect you to popular spots like Ripley's Aquarium and even offer access points for exploring the edges of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Some accommodations, like those associated with Dollywood, may have their own dedicated trolley services for convenient access to the park. This interconnectedness, though sometimes requiring a bit of planning, significantly enhances mobility within the Gatlinburg area.
When planning your journey, remember that while the trolley is free, patience is key. The unpredictability of arrival times means building in buffer time for your travels, especially if you have timed reservations or are trying to catch a specific event. Despite the occasional wait, the ability to avoid parking fees and traffic congestion makes the Gatlinburg Trolley an invaluable resource for visitors.
