Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about Gold Butte's stunning, otherworldly desert landscapes and unique rock formations, calling it a photographer's dream. However, the extremely remote location and rough, unpaved roads are significant challenges, requiring a capable vehicle and thorough preparation due to the complete lack of services.

"Otherworldly Mars-like typography. Sharp sandstone formations. Great place to scramble around and take photos. Kid friendly, with some supervision. Long dirt road with lots of washboards. Very remote location. No services whatsoever, including no pit toilets."

Steve Horne

"Beautiful. Not much information. The online map was good but, not informative.
Road ok. It was dry though. In wet times it would be difficult."

Lavonna Skeans

"Loved it, we still talk about how amazingly pretty it is but I doubt we'll do it again. The road in is very bumpy but that's good because once they re-pave it then everyone will come here. We loved it empty! Warning--there are no services at all in the monument.
There are several campsites if you have a small footprint. There's one huge one right at Whitney Pocket that we were lucky to get with our 27 foot Class C (which was badly shaken after that drive). RV should simply park locally and drive in with side-x-side or tow vehicle. After the "paved" road turns to dirt, take the right fork to Devil's Throat and Little Finland. Or take the whole day and do the whole loop."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

Navigating Gold Butte's Backcountry Roads

Gold Butte National Monument is defined by its rugged, unpaved road network. The primary access is via the Gold Butte Road, which can be extremely washboarded and challenging. Many visitors emphasize the need for a high-clearance 4WD vehicle to navigate these conditions safely. Reddit It's crucial to check weather forecasts before your trip, as rain can quickly turn these dirt tracks into impassable mud pits. Downloading offline maps is essential, as cell service is virtually non-existent throughout the monument. Reddit

Beyond the main road, numerous backcountry tracks branch off, leading to various geological wonders. These roads can be even more primitive and require careful navigation. For those with larger vehicles like RVs, it's often advised to park them locally and explore Gold Butte with a smaller, more agile vehicle like a side-by-side or a capable SUV. Reddit This approach allows for a more comfortable and safer exploration of the monument's remote beauty without risking damage to larger rigs.

Experiencing the Unique Geology of Gold Butte

The geology of Gold Butte National Monument is truly its standout feature, often described as otherworldly and Mars-like. The area is characterized by dramatic sandstone formations, sculpted over millennia by wind and water erosion. Little Finland is another testament to this artistry, featuring delicate, wind-carved hoodoos and arches that appear almost too fragile to exist. Reddit

Beyond these famous landmarks, the monument is dotted with countless other fascinating rock formations, canyons, and geological curiosities. Exploring the backcountry roads reveals a constantly changing landscape of sharp sandstone, colorful desert varnish, and vast, open vistas. The Seven Keyholes slot canyon offers a more intimate geological experience, requiring a bit of scrambling to navigate its narrow passages.
