North Dakota is the easiest state for first time voters. Just take your state I.D. to your local polling place. That's it. Young voters, America needs you on November 5th.

What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Reviews for the Grand Forks County Courthouse are mixed, with some visitors praising the professionalism and helpfulness of staff, while others express significant frustration with perceived rudeness, unresponsiveness, and difficulties in accessing necessary court forms. Concerns have also been raised regarding judicial impartiality and adherence to the law by some judges.
"I have watched for many weeks rulings been handed down that are COMPLETELY BIAS. 2 judges in particular are incapable of looking at evidence that heavily favors some cases. They need to stop legislating from the bench. New judges are a must to start upholding the constitution and an oath they refuse to abide by.
Appeals coming and exposer to a broken system will happen."

"The court clerks are absolutely rude. I am not even from the state of North Dakota and my soon to be ex wifes attorney filed for divorce in Grand Forks County when there is already an open case in a different county in a different state that was already filed and in motion a month prior. My ex was already served. The case is invalid as per court papers state that if there is already a pending case somewhere else then you cannot file for divorce in another place. I called to see if they have a form to fill out for dismissing the case because the case is invalid. Then she got rude and snotty and said I cannot give you legal advice as she is not an attorney. I was not asking for legal advice. I was asking for a form which is their job as a clerk to provide. Court administration is about forms and paperwork. I was not asking how to fill it out, I was not asking the next step, etc... I was simply asking if there was an order for dismissal form cause their websites are horrible for Self Help and finding/obtaining documents.
In the state of Minnesota at least they provide you all instructions, all the documents you need, etc...in the self help center. When people fight cases pro se, then we the people need clear access to the appropriate documents we need to file. When the system does not provide access to those documents, then they are impeding on our civil liberties by not giving us the clear access to represent ourselves or giving us the tools we need to get the job done.
Very disgusted. This is how the government treats people."

"The workers are rude and refuse to help in anyway. When you finally get them to do anything they always have to run off and ask someone else how something is done. When paying anything from a fine to court they do not assist in anyway and try to get you out or off of the phone."

Understanding Court Operations
Navigating the courthouse can be daunting, especially for those unfamiliar with legal processes. The court clerks play a crucial role in assisting the public with forms and procedural information. However, as noted in some reviews, the level of assistance and perceived helpfulness can vary, and clerks are prohibited from giving legal advice. For individuals representing themselves (pro se litigants), accessing the correct forms and understanding how to file them is paramount. The county's website or the clerk's office are the primary resources for this information, though accessibility can sometimes be a point of frustration for users.
When planning a visit, whether for a hearing, to file documents, or to observe proceedings, it's advisable to arrive early. Security screenings are standard, and court schedules can be unpredictable. Familiarizing yourself with basic courtroom etiquette—such as dressing respectfully, remaining quiet during sessions, and following the instructions of court staff—will ensure a smoother experience. The Grand Forks County Courthouse is a place of significant civic importance, and understanding its functions and protocols enhances the visitor's appreciation and engagement.
Navigating Legal Assistance and Forms
Compared to some other states, like Minnesota, where self-help centers are noted for providing comprehensive instructions and documents, the experience in Grand Forks may feel less streamlined for pro se litigants. This disparity highlights the importance of clear communication with court staff and thorough preparation before visiting. If you require specific forms, it's often best to call ahead or visit the clerk's office prepared with precise questions about document names or numbers. This proactive approach can help mitigate potential difficulties in obtaining the necessary paperwork for your legal matters.
Beyond forms, if legal advice is needed, individuals should seek out qualified attorneys or legal aid services. The court staff at the Grand Forks Court House are bound by ethical rules and cannot offer legal counsel. Understanding this distinction is key to managing expectations and ensuring you receive appropriate support for your legal needs.
