What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise Grand Isle State Park for its clean facilities, serene waterfront, and peaceful camping atmosphere, noting it as a great escape. However, the lack of power/water hookups at campsites and challenging boat launch conditions are recurring drawbacks.
"We last camped here in 2010 with our three little children. Fifteen years later, we are back tent camping again with 2 of our 3 children along with a boat to see Lake Champlain. Site was excellent, very clean and the bathroom and showers were amazingly clean. Just like they were 15 years ago. There is no power or water hook ups for campers and RVs but in the morning some ran small generators to repower their batteries while others used solar panels. Very quiet camp ground. They have a boat launch on site with a dock, but the water level were way to low to back or 23' boat in. The launch pavement did not go into the water but stopped short and the rest was large rocks. Spoke to a guy who tried dropping a 24' pontoon boat and he said the rocks damaged his trailer tail lights. It is also a very steep launch. Best ace to launch any boat over 20feet is Apple Marine at the southern tip of South Hero.
Other wise, we had a excellent time here. The smoke from the Canada wild fires was pretty thick some days where we could not see across the lake at all. We would definitely camp here again. If your towing a camper with long bed pick up and a camper over 25feet, turns into some of the sites are very tight. Just a heads up. There is no "Day Usage" at this park. It's for campers only."

"Beautiful park with a few negatives. One. There is no power at the campsite. Too. You need quarters to take a shower. Otherwise the showers are very clean and the campsite was very nice."

"What a lovely state park! We had a huge campsite that was comfortable for 3 tents and 6 adults. The restrooms/showers are vintage but clean and functional. Showers are coin operated.
It was a quiet, family friendly campground with a cute little beach and nature center with youth programs. The only small drawback is that the water front sites are overgrown with trees on the other side of a fence. You could see the water in some parts but not all of the site. Overall- a great place!"

Camping Experience at Grand Isle
Waterfront sites are highly sought after for their views, but it's worth checking the specific site details as some can be overgrown with trees, partially obscuring the lake. The park's commitment to cleanliness, noted by campers even after fifteen years, is a significant plus. The overall vibe is peaceful and family-friendly, making it a great escape for those looking to disconnect and enjoy the natural beauty of Lake Champlain.
Preparing for Your Campsite
Given the lack of hookups, advance planning is key. Ensure your RV batteries are fully charged or you have adequate solar power. Bring extra water or a purification system if needed. For those with larger RVs or campers, be mindful of site size and maneuverability, as some turns can be tight. The park's 'no day usage' policy means that if you're not camping, you can't access the park's amenities, so a camping reservation is essential for entry.
Boating and Fishing on Lake Champlain
For larger boats (over 20 feet), it's recommended to use alternative launch sites like Apple Marine at the southern tip of South Hero, as the park's launch may not be suitable. Despite these challenges, the lake offers opportunities for various water activities. Visitors have mentioned catching fish like flounder, redfish, and bull reds, highlighting the area's fishing potential.
Fishing Hotspots and Tips
While the park's launch might be tricky, the surrounding waters are known for their abundance. Anglers often target bull reds and other popular species. If you're planning a fishing trip, consider checking local fishing reports and conditions. The park's nature center might also offer insights into local aquatic life. Remember to check local regulations regarding fishing licenses and catch limits.
The Unique Charm of Grand Isle
However, this island setting also means that amenities and services can be spread out. Groceries, specific stores, or even services like UPS might require a significant drive, sometimes over an hour. This necessitates careful planning for supplies and errands. Despite the logistical considerations, the unique character of Grand Isle, with its blend of natural beauty and laid-back lifestyle, makes it a memorable destination.
Embracing Island Life
To truly enjoy Grand Isle, visitors are encouraged to embrace the slower pace. Instead of rushing, take the time to soak in the surroundings, whether it's the sound of the waves, the local wildlife, or the friendly atmosphere. This mindset shift can transform a potentially inconvenient aspect (like distance to services) into an opportunity to appreciate the tranquility and unique character of the island.
