Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise the Grand Rapids Public Museum for its diverse and engaging exhibits, particularly the immersive 'Streets of Old Grand Rapids' and the impressive 'Sharks' display. The planetarium is a standout feature, offering captivating cosmic journeys. It's highly recommended for families due to its interactive nature and kid-friendly features, including thoughtful amenities like sensory bags. While generally well-received, some visitors suggest allocating at least 2-3 hours to fully appreciate all the museum has to offer.

"The exhibits at the GR Public Museum seem to change fairly frequently, but there are a wide assortment of topics covered. Sharks made one of the main exhibits during my last visit, and the full scale models of some species were impressive. If you’re interested in the history of Grand Rapids there is plenty of information on that, and the scale model of the streets of a century ago is pretty cool. This museum can probably be comfortably explored in a couple of hours, but there’s a lot for kids to explore and enjoy here. It’s definitely a good option for families, but there’s probably a little something for everyone here."

"Absolutely fabulous museum. Great variety of knowledge shared and lots of Michigan specific information. Sharks exhibit is really well done. I learned a lot. Three stories of fascinating artifacts displayed in a memorable and meaningful way. It's not a children museum but set up to be visually and physically engaging. Several child play areas. My favorite was the Grand Rapids main street. The best. Also enjoyed the old school way they exhibited flora, fauna, animals and habitats of Michigan. Wished I'd had family, especially my grandchildren with me. They would have loved this. I spend 2 hours, but probably needed 3. I'm a reader. Nice gift shop too."

Kat

"We had such a great time at the Grand Rapids Public Museum! It truly has something for everyone — my kids were totally engaged the whole time, and honestly, so were we!

Old Grand Rapids is always a personal favorite of mine — like stepping into a time machine. My husband loved the animal exhibits and fish tanks, and my daughter couldn’t get enough of the Fashion + Nature exhibit and the Shark Experience (both currently on display and super well done!).

But the absolute highlight? The planetarium. The Space Dome show was amazing — so immersive! And it was such a nice bonus to have a small snack bar upstairs nearby while we waited.

We also loved the LEGO displays (so creative and fun for all ages), and the doll room had everyone mesmerized. Truly something to enjoy in every corner.

They even offer sensory bags at the front desk — such a thoughtful, inclusive touch. And the staff were super kind and helpful.

Whether you’re local or just visiting Grand Rapids, this place is 100% worth a visit. Educational, fun, and full of surprises — we’ll definitely be back!"
