What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise the intriguing pictographs and the spectacular, awe-inspiring canyon landscape. The scenic drive is a highlight, though a 4WD vehicle is recommended for sandy sections. Some express disappointment over modern graffiti marring the ancient art, and access can be tricky if the cattle gate is closed.
"Great place to drive back into. You would need a modest 4wheel drive just due to clearance issues on the trails in."

"Intriguing pictographs that I have not seen anywhere like this before. The canyon is beautiful and easy to access from I-70 when the cattle gate is open. Otherwise, a scenic few miles down UT24 to make a loop under freeway or could opt for a way longer UTV trip from Cottonwood Wash rd. There is Parking lot at trailhead with no facilities parking lot is less than a mile to pictographs. The whole Canyon is awesome to explore on foot.
PLEASE do not litter or go off route in a vehicle. Let's keep this open for everyone."

"The pictographs here are in decent condition. More importantly, the canyon is spectacular. The combination of the canyon and the pictograph make this one of my favorite roads in the area.
The road to the pictograph is easy. There is one spot before the canyon that is sandy so 4-wheel drive is recommended. The road continues past the pictograph and the further up the canyon you go the harder it gets. To be honest, anybody with offroad experience will find this easy, but I wouldn't recommend this for a crossover SUV if you plan on following the road past the pictographs."

Understanding the Pictographs
One of the most striking aspects of these pictographs is their longevity, having survived for hundreds, if not thousands, of years. However, their preservation is a growing concern. Visitors are urged to observe them from a distance and avoid touching or defacing the art. The presence of modern graffiti, as noted by visitors, unfortunately detracts from the experience and poses a threat to the integrity of these ancient cultural artifacts.
The San Rafael Swell region, where Black Dragon Canyon is located, is rich in geological and historical significance. The canyon itself, carved by eons of erosion, provides a dramatic backdrop for the pictographs, enhancing their mystique. The combination of natural beauty and ancient human artistry makes this a compelling destination for those interested in history, archaeology, and the rugged landscapes of Utah.
Navigating the Canyon Road
Access can vary. A cattle gate sometimes controls entry directly from I-70. If this gate is open, it provides a more direct route. However, if it's closed, visitors will need to take a longer detour via UT24, which adds significant mileage and time to the trip. Missing the unmarked turn-off from I-70 can also lead to a substantial backtrack, as the next available turnaround point is miles away.
Beyond the pictograph site, the road continues further into the canyon, becoming progressively more difficult. This section is generally not recommended for standard passenger vehicles or even many crossover SUVs. Experienced off-roaders might find it manageable, but it underscores the importance of being prepared and knowing your vehicle's limits.
