The surrounding natural environment encompasses braided glacial rivers, dense coniferous forests, and rugged mountainous terrain, supporting a diverse ecosystem that includes salmon runs, bald eagles, brown and black bears, moose, wolves, beavers, coyotes, and various migratory bird species. "Beautiful place and hardly anyone was there. You need decent glass to spot the eagles here especially if you come at the time of the year we did (mid June). Plenty of parking and a couple of insanely easy trails. But no facilities other than bathrooms here. If you're visiting from a cruise you are not getting here on foot you definitely need to rent a car!"

"Second time here once in August and now in November for the American Bald Eagle Festival. First day on the river to photograph Eagles and a very large Brown Bear stole the show, he was going up and down the river catching the Chum Salmon. What a great treat to photograph Eagles and a large bear. And Haines is my Happy Place!!!"
