What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise the Reading Railroad Heritage Museum for its extensive collection and friendly staff. It's particularly lauded as a fantastic, interactive experience for children, with many calling it a toddler's favorite museum. While not the largest, its focus on the Reading Railroad is a unique strength.
"First time being with my kiddo. They have a decent selection of trains from the railroad out in the yard, in addition to model train layouts and other memorabilia from the days of the railroad. The trains in the yard are a mix of diesel engines, freight cars, and passengers.
The model train layouts were decent, encompassing different scales such as HO, N, and possibly O. I found all the layouts to be decent, but I prefer HO.
They also have a video about the history of the railroad, which was interesting because it covered the history till the end. I didn't realize how many of the rail lines are still in use today by SEPTA and other entities. In addition, I also didn’t know how big the railroad was at its peak and the areas it served.
One thing that was interesting for me was the rail yard tower controls from Reading Terminal, Philadelphia. This was especially interesting for me since I grew up in the Philadelphia area and have been to the market in the Reading Terminal train depot. When they first mentioned where the controls came from, I was shocked because it's easily 20 feet long and seemed to be too big to fit in a rail yard tower."

"What a wonderful little place. It was our toddlers favorite so far out of all the museums... and we've been to a lot of train museums!
We got a tour of a fascinating old locomotive... explored several trains, the museum has a lot of interactive pieces with models. They playground is a blast. They have a train that you can pretend is a real engine and makes all the noises and was of intrest to the kids and to the adults. Would def recommend if youre in the area."

"While not the largest museum, they have the largest collection of one single railroad in the country. 99% of their collection is for the Reading Railroad. With a few good sized model train layouts, it's a really nice place to visit. The staff are friendly and helpful"
