What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about the stunning, rugged beauty of West Clear Creek Wilderness, describing it as a sacred, temple-like place with towering cliffs and refreshing creek waters. However, some find the unpaved access roads challenging and have experienced navigation issues. The creek crossings can be harrowing but are part of the adventure for those well-prepared.
"Tried to cross an unpaved road. Closed off. So it navigated us to another area to another unpaved road. After that...it took us to a regular road just to take us to the closed off unpaved road where we started. ... We gave up...wish we could have seen it. 7/29/25 10:28am."

"Great place to backpack and hike. We also saw several people fishing. As others have mentioned, the road in is rugged so have an appropriate car. Other important thing to know: to get to any campsites, you have to do at least one creek crossing. When we were there (mid-March) the water came up to almost my waist (I’m 5’7”). It was harrowing, I won’t lie. But the trails are well maintained and the scenery is beautiful."

Navigating the Terrain: Roads and Trails
Once you reach a trailhead, the trails themselves can be demanding. The Point Trail is frequently mentioned for its steep descent into the canyon, involving boulder climbing and a significant elevation change over a short distance. Other trails follow the creek, requiring multiple creek crossings. These crossings can be waist-deep or even higher, making water shoes a crucial piece of gear.
It's important to note that this is a primitive wilderness area. Trails may not be perfectly maintained, and navigation can sometimes be challenging. Thoroughly researching trail conditions and downloading offline maps before your visit is highly recommended to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.
The Allure of the Water: Creek Activities
Activities like creeking and fishing are popular. When planning your visit, be prepared for the water temperature, which can be quite cold, especially in spring. Visitors often describe the experience of wading through the cool water as invigorating and a key part of the wilderness adventure. Remember to wear appropriate water shoes to protect your feet from slippery rocks and potential hazards.
Beyond swimming, the creek is central to the wilderness's beauty, carving dramatic canyons and supporting a vibrant ecosystem. The sound of the flowing water and the sight of the verdant banks create a serene and almost sacred atmosphere for many.
Embracing the Wilderness: Solitude and Scenery
The scenery is a major highlight, with dramatic canyons carved by the creek, lush greenery contrasting with the arid landscape, and unique geological formations. It's a place where you can truly disconnect and immerse yourself in nature.
While the wilderness offers a peaceful escape, some visitors have noted that occasional loud groups can detract from the tranquility. However, for those seeking a more secluded experience, the isolated nature of the area and the effort required to access it often mean fewer crowds, especially on weekdays.
