What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise Loudoun Heights Overlook for its exceptional, breathtaking views of the Potomac River and surrounding landscape, often deeming it superior to nearby alternatives. The trail is generally well-marked and offers a rewarding moderate hike, though some note the presence of power lines and the intensity of the wind at the summit.
"Loudoun Heights views were exceptional. I especially enjoyed that the trail is clearly marked at intersections. Parked across the river and took the walk across the brigde before getting to the trail head. The location itself was not without reminders of the modern world, like the high tension power lines. It’s perfect for solo or group hikes. Bonus points that there is multiple trails and good food/drink options nearby.
Definitely recommend Loudoun Heights Overlook Hike if you're looking for an easy out and back hike."

"I parked at the River Access Parking Lot off of Shenandoah St. for $20 and followed the sign for Loudoun Height's Trail. The sign by the parking lot says that the trail is 1.4 miles out. I kept left and walked over the bridge and under up into the woods. I have to say, I enjoyed this trail more than I did MD heights. (Which is on the other side of the Potomac River). It took me a little over 3 hours out and back; and that's including a little lunch break. The trail itself is moderate, up and down and windy. I brought my hiking sticks, and recommend doing the same. The wind today at split rock overlook was out of this world. So, I must say, this overlook literally "blew" me away. 🤪"

"Great place to relax after a nearly 2 hour long hike from the river access parking lot. Part of the way is shared with the Appalachian Trail."

The Hike to Loudoun Heights
This trail shares segments with the famed Appalachian Trail, offering a taste of this iconic long-distance path. The terrain can be rocky in places, and the wind at the higher elevations can be significant, even on otherwise pleasant days, so bringing extra layers is a wise precaution, especially during cooler months. The effort is well worth it, as the summit provides unparalleled vistas that many find more impressive than those from nearby Maryland Heights.
Unforgettable Views from the Overlooks
To reach the Split Rock overlooks, hikers need to be attentive to trail markers and make a specific turn onto the orange trail. While the main overlooks are easily accessible, a slight detour off the marked path might be necessary to capture the absolute best angles for photography. The combination of the rugged rock formations and the expansive river valley creates a truly memorable scene, making the hike a must-do for anyone seeking stunning natural beauty and photographic opportunities.
