What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Angel Hill Cemetery presents a mixed experience for visitors. While many appreciate the historical significance and the efforts of volunteers in preserving its markers, challenges arise with communication and locating specific plots. The lack of readily available information and slow response times from administration can be frustrating for those seeking to manage interments or find family graves.
"My mom was buried there in 1969,at time we didn't put a headstone on the grave. When I called and finally got a person, I told him I had gotten the location a couple of times from the man that was in charge.
The one who agreed to come out met with me and I told him where approximately she was buried.he had this long copied paper. My mom's grave was positioned generally in one plot. The grave we thought was hers, he decided to use a detector of some sort on it. He called me back and said it wasnt right because no vault was found...I distinctly remembered she had a vault.
My brother just passed away and I want to bury his ashes above my mother.
I was told the man who ran the cemetery had passed away.
Well since they can't locate my mom's grave, how can they even consider burying any one in that plot?
I have called repeatedly ,left messsges at least 10 and gotten no reply.
My biggest concern is how can they be sure to put any person in that plot and disturb my mom's grave!"

Understanding Cemetery Records and Plot Management
For those researching genealogy or planning family interments, it's crucial to gather as much information as possible beforehand. This includes any plot numbers, names, and dates associated with your family members. Persistence in contacting the cemetery administration, leaving detailed messages, and potentially engaging with local historical societies or volunteer groups can be beneficial. These groups sometimes have access to older records or can offer guidance on navigating the cemetery's organizational structure.
When dealing with plot management, especially for new interments, clear communication with the cemetery is paramount. Understanding their procedures for verifying existing graves, identifying available space, and the process for new burials will help manage expectations. Be prepared for the possibility that precise location data might be scarce, and the cemetery may rely on methods like ground-penetrating radar or careful excavation to confirm grave sites, as suggested by the mention of a detector used to check for a vault.
The Role of Volunteers and Preservation
For individuals with a deep connection to the cemetery, whether through family history or a general interest in local heritage, volunteering can be a rewarding way to contribute. This might involve participating in cleanup days, assisting with record-keeping, or helping to identify and maintain specific historical markers. Engaging with such volunteer efforts can also provide unique insights into the cemetery's past and its ongoing needs.
If you are seeking information about the cemetery's history or need assistance with genealogical research related to its inhabitants, reaching out to local historical societies or chapters of organizations like the NSDAR (National Society Daughters of the American Revolution) can be a valuable step. These organizations often have members with extensive knowledge of local cemeteries and may be able to provide guidance or direct you to relevant resources.
