Reviews Summary

Visitors find Hell's Half Acre Lava Field to be a unique and interesting natural wonder, especially appreciating its accessibility and free entry. However, some note that trail markers can be inconsistent, and sturdy footwear is absolutely essential for navigating the sharp, uneven terrain.

"Not the most intuitive hike with lots of broken or missing trail markers. Very unique and not a far drive from downtown Idaho Falls, though."

Caleb Melton

"Really interesting and unique landscape and we were happy we went. We did the smaller 1/2 mile loop but if we’d have had more time we would have definitely done the longer 4.5 mi trail out to the vent and back (9 miles total). Definitely need sturdy shoes for the sharp rocks and uneven surface, as well as plenty of water, but it was a cool hike. Surprised it’s not more popular.

I am a little confused because trails we had (posted at the site) do look different from some of the other maps posted here. Maybe they update them from time to time."

Erin Reid

"We hiked this place a while back . The long hike is farther than you think . You have to find markers to know where you are going . Make sure you wear good hiking boots, tennis shoes did not cut it ."
