What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors appreciate the Hofstra University Museum of Art for its free admission and the warmth of its staff. While the exhibition space is compact, the curated shows can be thought-provoking, and the outdoor sculptures offer an added artistic element to the campus. Some visitors note that the museum's size doesn't match the extensive collection described, leading to potential unmet expectations regarding the displayed art.
"Staff is warm and eager to help with your questions about this very small one room art museum, including some Dali. They have brochures and outdoor sculptures too. There are other museums in the area and it's not far from the shopping mall, so make a day out of it. You can view the art in about 10-30mins, so I wouldn't make a special trip just for this."

"Ok. I took a long trip out here this week because me and my wife wanted to visit an art museum that we hadn't discovered yet. The website says this: "The collection contains more than 5,200 works of art and cultural artifacts, dating from 1500 BCE to the 21st century, representing six continents, plus 70 sculptures that can be found displayed across Hofstra’s campus."
This is absolutely not true. The art museum is one small room, with very few pieces of art, currently showing some modern political stuff that was not particularly interesting. The very nice girl there told us that the 5,200 pieces were in storage. So please, if you're considering going here to see all that art from 1500 BCE to the 21st century representing six continents...it's not there. Also, there were not 70 sculptures around the campus, but like...6. What is with the false advertising here?"

"Not so easy to see right off of Hempstead Turnpike servicing Uniondale and the adjoining areas of Nassau County. Plenty of parking and a wheelchair accessible entrance. Moderately clean facilities. Public Restrooms. Located on the grounds of Hofstra university."

Understanding the Collection vs. Exhibition Space

However, the staff is commended for being warm and helpful in explaining the situation and the current exhibits.
Therefore, visitors should approach the Hofstra University Museum of Art with the understanding that it offers a focused, intimate encounter with art rather than an expansive survey. The value lies in the quality and thoughtfulness of the rotating exhibitions, which can feature significant artists, rather than the sheer volume of art on display.

It's a great way to combine a visit to the museum with a stroll through the university grounds, especially during pleasant weather.
When planning your visit, consider allocating a little extra time to seek out these sculptures. They contribute to the overall cultural landscape of Hofstra University and provide unique photo opportunities.
