Reviews Summary

The Hermosa Beach Skate Park is frequently criticized for its restrictive membership policy and mandatory safety gear, which many feel detract from its public nature. Skaters also note its limited design and lack of flow, making it less appealing for varied tricks. Many recommend the nearby beach strand as a superior alternative for a more relaxed and free experience.

"Such an absolute bummer..... Any Skater can tell its not really a skatepark. It's just 5 or 6 poorly placed, random obstacles. And to be forced to put pads on every part of ur body, even as an adult(under 18 needing pads, id be cool with) but theres a reason ITS ALWAYS EMPTY and living here my whole life it bums me out everytime i see it Stil! The 1st year it opened i rented it out for my bday in like 5th/6th grade and got to bring like 20-30 kids. The new park hype was real and at that age dropping in ment you were good....we werent able to understand yet, that was baisically all the park had to offer....Just kidding, Kinda... there's 1 or 2 skateable things just don't come here hoping for any kinda sick multi trick runs or even fun lines to find. Theres really only 1 line down the middle of the "park"......

Anyways TLDR
Just go skate the strand! whether its with the homies, ur chick, or even ur kids it'll be a much more enjoyable session 100% 🧟🛹💀"

"Just don’t Go, you have more dignity and skater pride than to stoop THIS LOW, THEY DONT WANT US ? THEY DONT DESERVE US"

"I've been here in the past and this is the only skatepark that I have a complete distaste for as it is small and not much to do. Another point is that they closed the park for a teaching over there but no one has been there because I have seen with my naked eyes as they are just trying keep out skaters. Overall, a bad park and a sad way of funding and a ghost-town for all skateparks and would recommend the one at the pier instead."

For Different Travelers

Tailored advice for your travel style

👨‍👩‍👧 Families with Kids

For families with children, the Hermosa Beach Skate Park presents a mixed bag. While it's a designated space for skating, the mandatory membership and strict safety gear requirements (helmet, elbow, and knee pads for everyone) can be a significant hurdle and expense. Reddit The park's limited flow and basic obstacles might also not hold the attention of younger skaters for long. Reddit

Given these factors, many families might find the Hermosa Beach Strand a more appealing option. It's a free, open path perfect for kids to ride bikes, scooters, or skateboards in a less restrictive environment. The beach itself also offers plenty of entertainment. Reddit

💰 Budget Travelers

The Hermosa Beach Skate Park can be a challenge for budget-conscious travelers due to its mandatory membership requirement for a public facility. Reddit This fee, combined with the necessity of purchasing or bringing full safety gear (helmet, elbow, and knee pads), can add up. Reddit

For a free and enjoyable skating experience, consider exploring the Hermosa Beach Strand. This scenic beach path allows for cruising and casual skating without any entry fees or gear mandates, making it a much more budget-friendly alternative. Reddit

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

Understanding the Membership and Safety Requirements

The Hermosa Beach Skate Park operates under a strict membership and safety gear policy that has drawn significant criticism. All users, regardless of age, are required to have a membership and wear a helmet, elbow pads, and knee pads at all times. Reddit This policy is enforced by city staff present at the entrance, leading to many visitors being turned away if they don't comply. Reddit The rationale behind these strict rules, particularly the membership for a public facility, has been questioned by locals and visitors alike, contributing to the park's often empty state. Reddit

This approach contrasts sharply with many other public skate parks, where such stringent requirements are not typically enforced. The mandatory gear and membership have led to a perception that the park is unwelcoming to skaters, despite its public designation. Reddit If you plan to visit, ensure you have all the necessary safety equipment and understand the membership process beforehand to avoid disappointment.

Design and Flow: A Skater's Perspective

Feedback from skaters consistently points to a lack of flow and limited, uninspired obstacles at the Hermosa Beach Skate Park. Reddit Reviewers describe it as having only a few 'random obstacles' and not being conducive to 'multi-trick runs' or 'fun lines.' Reddit The park's layout is often characterized as having only one main line down the middle, which can make it feel repetitive and unchallenging for experienced skaters. Reddit

This design philosophy has led many to suggest alternative skating locations within Hermosa Beach. The Hermosa Beach Strand, a paved path along the ocean, is frequently recommended as a more enjoyable and versatile option for cruising, casual skating, and even practicing basic flat-ground tricks. Reddit The Strand offers a more open and scenic environment, appealing to a broader range of users than the confined and less dynamic skate park. Reddit
