Near the end of our recent dinosaur excavation with the Dinolab team from @naturalismuseum, Anne Schulp (my PhD advisor) and I visited the Black Hills Institute @everythingprehistoricbhigr. We were lucky enough to be shown the ins and outs of the museum (and collections and workshop) by the one and only @petelarsontrex. Learned a lot discussing all things #trex (even got to see a cast of Stan the ...

Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about the Black Hills Institute Museum, praising its incredible value for the low admission price and the astonishing density of fossils and minerals packed into its space. It's a highly recommended stop for families and anyone interested in natural history, with many highlighting the unique gift shop finds and the museum's significant paleontological contributions. Some wish the building were larger to spread out the exhibits, but most agree it's a must-see.

"For 7.50, I thought this museum was hands down worth it. I am not sure what lured me to go here, but I went on my own to visit. I was amazed at how many dinosaur, mammal, and aquatic animal bones they fit into one room for display. Not only that, but they had displays of rocks as well. There were big animals too- a t.rex, mammoth, and some very big sea creatures. This place is great for kids. You can spend anywhere from five minutes to hours here looking and observing the artifacts. Many of the bones are local but several were also from Madagascar. Very cool place, and worth spending seven to eight dollars. There is a gift store attached. The people working here seemed nice, especially the young lady at the desk. Always great to see young respectful teenagers working."

"A packed collection of fossils and high-quality reproductions along with abundant rock and mineral samples. The history of this institution makes it all the more attractive, especially its discoveries of Sue and Stan, the most complete T-Rex fossils to date, both found in the state of South Dakota. Also, very low cost to enter, which is much appreciated. I loved it!"

Benjamin Flegal

"We LOVED this place!! It was a last minute addition to our family vacation, and I'm SO GLAD we went. I am amazed at how many fossils and artifacts they were able to fit into a relatively small space. About half the space is the museum, and the other half is the gift shop with an incredible variety of options. My kids got a megalodon tooth and vials of gold, copper and silver. I got an amazing granite sculpture as a memento of our vacation. There was a snafu that resulted in us leaving without the sculpture, but when I called they had it set aside and ready to send to us. Amazing service with some totally unique exhibits. A must see, as far as I'm concerned."
