Reviews Summary

Many appreciate the insights gained from tours and the peaceful atmosphere of the grounds, including the royal tombs. Some note that while services are traditional, the preaching is inspiring. "Kawaiahaʻo Church–the national house of prayer located in Downtown Honolulu near ʻIolani Palace, Hawaiʻi. Kawaiahaʻo Church was established under Kuhina Nui (Queen-Regent) Kaʻahumanu I in the year 1820. Known as the "Westminster Abbey of the Pacific," Kawaiahaʻo Church was the first Christian Church built on Oʻahu. Dedicated on July 21, 1842, “The Great Stone Church” is made of 14,000 coral slabs from ocean reefs that were hauled from the sea by native laborers and missionaries. The church and the grounds were named a National Historic Landmark in 1962. "Kauikeaouli clock," donated by King Kamehameha III in 1850, still tolls the hours to this day. To the right of the entrance you’ll find the peaceful tomb of King Lunalilo. This popular King ruled for just a little over one year and he wished to be buried “among his people” at Kawaiahaʻo Church rather than in the Royal Mausoleum. To the left of the church you’ll also find the Kawaiahaʻo Fountain. The High Chiefess Haʻo bathed in this sacred spring, giving the church its name: Ka Wai a Haʻo, or the water of Haʻo. Kawaiahaʻo Church still serves as a center of worship for Hawaiʻi’s people, with services conducted every Sunday in Hawaiian and English. Portraits of the royal family adorn the walls of the second floor."

"THE FIRST CHURCH ESTABLISHED IN THESE HAWAIIAN ISLANDS, WHICH IS STEEPED IN LOCAL HISTORY AND CULTURE.

A minister who leads his congregation and preaches from the heart and with a special, unique compassion? My friends who attend Kawaiaha'o Church firmly believe so affirming these qualities in their note to me. They recenty wrote::

"We have been going to Kawaiaha’o. We really like Kahu  Ken Maukakāne, he sends us  off into the week to “ Go out and give them Heaven”. The worship is much more traditional, ...but all in all it is inspiring and most of all Ken Maukakāne speaks God’s word from the heart, and that is inspiring."

Historically the Kawaiahao Church was the very first Christian church to be built in these Hawaiian islands. The church members naturally stand up for and champion many local Hawaiian issues.

This magnificent church ediface is primarily built with local ocean coral blocks. It once was and still is an awe inspiring structure.

The last remaining ruling queen, Queen Lilioukalani, a strong, devoted Christian and her family attended church here."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Coral Construction of Kawaiaha'o

One of the most striking features of Kawaiaha'o Church is its unique construction. The main sanctuary, often referred to as 'The Great Stone Church,' is primarily built from approximately 14,000 coral slabs. These massive blocks were meticulously harvested from ocean reefs and then transported to the site by native Hawaiian laborers and missionaries. This labor-intensive process took years to complete, highlighting the dedication and effort involved in its creation. The result is a robust and historically significant structure that has withstood the test of time. Reddit

The use of coral was a practical choice given the local environment, but it also imbues the church with a distinct aesthetic. The rough texture and natural color of the coral give the building a timeless and organic feel. Visitors often remark on the impressive scale and the sheer ingenuity required to build such a structure in the 19th century. Reddit

This architectural marvel is a testament to the collaboration between Hawaiian traditions and the early missionary efforts, creating a landmark that is both a place of worship and a significant historical monument. The dedication of the church on July 21, 1842, marked a pivotal moment in the history of Christianity in Hawaii. Reddit

Royal Connections and Legacy

Kawaiaha'o Church holds a special place in Hawaiian history due to its deep connections with the islands' royalty. It was established under the patronage of Kuhina Nui (Queen-Regent) Ka'ahumanu I in 1820, signifying its importance from its inception. The church later became a favored place of worship for many Hawaiian monarchs, including King Kamehameha III, who donated the 'Kauikeaouli clock' in 1850. Reddit

Perhaps one of the most poignant royal connections is the tomb of King Lunalilo, located on the church grounds. Unlike other monarchs who are interred in the Royal Mausoleum, King Lunalilo expressed a wish to be buried 'among his people' at Kawaiaha'o. This decision underscores the church's role as a spiritual center for all Hawaiians, not just the ruling elite. Reddit

Furthermore, the last reigning monarch, Queen Lili'uokalani, and her family were also congregants. Portraits of these royal figures often adorn the church's interior, serving as a constant reminder of its historical significance and its enduring relationship with the Hawaiian monarchy. The church continues to be a place where the legacy of these rulers is honored and remembered. Reddit
