The drive, while long and on a gravel road, is considered part of the adventure and offers its own scenic beauty and wildlife spotting opportunities. The historic fire tower adds to the unique experience. Some find the drive challenging, and weather can obscure views, but the overall consensus is that it's a worthwhile destination for its incredible vistas and sense of remoteness.
"Easy to drive to as road was dirt but well graded. The lookout has gazebos and picnic tables. Paved paths up and around."

"The viewpoint is beautiful with a view of the northern section of Hells Canyon. You can even see a small section of Snake River. There's a fire watch tower you can go up. Bring a lunch, there are lots of picnic tables and firepits if you want to use. The difficulty is getting here. The drive is achievable with most cars but definitely not recommended if you don't have good tires and suspension. No trailers or RVs should attempt this, especially with it being a tight one lane road with minimal turnouts. The first section is a 16 degree grade for a couple miles. Make sure you don't overheat your brakes on the way down. There are a few federal campgrounds along the way, and numerous primitive areas you can make camp."

"Took about an hour and 45 min to drive up the rough gravel road. It was a slow but beautiful drive up. Saw lots of wild life. We drove through fog and rain and snow to get to the 6900ft elevation level of Hat point. We didn't have a view into hells canyon due to cloud cover in the valley even though we had blue sky above us.:) Still worth the drive and the trip over to see."
