What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Reviews for Heady Lane Cemetery (Oaklawn Memorial Gardens) are mixed, with some praising its role in hosting meaningful memorial services and noting the presence of a 9-11 memorial. However, a significant number of recent reviews express strong dissatisfaction with groundskeeping, citing overgrown weeds, debris on markers, and fading lettering. Issues with monument installation policies and a perceived lack of empathy from management have also been raised.
"Very disappointed in the upkeep. The flat markers are not holding up as the gold accent color on the lettering has almost completely come off. The ground crews mow over the markers and leave cut grass all over them. Weeds have grown up to the point of climbing up the vases and growing across the markers. I was very upset to see the condition of my family's site and those around them."

"We are extremely dissatisfied with the grounds keeping at our parents grave. How disappointing to arrive and not be able to read the headstone because it is covered with crabgrass and mowing debris. We just cleaned this headstone in May and trimmed all the overgrown grass away from the edges. We have NEVER seen the condition of the cemetery to be so overgrown and weedy. This is not what my parents paid for when choosing Oaklawn Cemetery. In your business you need to respect the headstones and keep the grounds in good condition. You can buy crabgrass control products. It appears no one in management ever walks this cemetery to see if it is properly maintained. How sad."

"EDIT: 7/16/19 - Over a year now to heal from the loss of my Daddy, and we finally get with a local monument company and take time and tears to design his headstone. Another bench, because darn it, that's what we wanted. Well, that isn't good enough. Oaklawn is refusing to have this installed and says we need to change it. WHY?? This is a monument, made by a local monument maker who does headstones, that will be professionally installed, etc. Yet they STILL continue to jerk us around?? I am SO disappointed and frustrated that they have my Daddy in their so called "care." If I had known any of this would have happened, I would have NEVER trusted them for the care of my loved one!! Horrible!!
This is simply a business, in every sense of the word. Here, the almighty dollar reigns supreme. They have zero human compassion and empathy. I am so very disgusted, heartbroken and disappointed.
My precious Daddy has no marker yet. At this time, it's been 50 days since he passed. Only 7 weeks. I refuse to let the greatest influence in my life be so easily neglected, forgotten and grown over like just another dead spot on your lawn. His passing was sudden and completely unexpected. We are trying to find not only the funds to get a headstone placed but are also trying to simply function without him. We decided to place a temporary marker - a nice concrete bench with his last name until we can order the final marker. However, because we didn't pay the powers that be directly, so they themselves can line their own pockets in the process, we were ordered to remove it. The only other "option" we were given was to hand over a good deal of money for a headstone. Period.
I feel like I'm losing a bit of him all over again. My Daddy, husband of almost 41 years to my mother, father of one (me!) and "Papa" to 5 grand-boys, (the last two being twins who will never be able to meet this amazing man.) Because of the callous people who run this cemetery, the wounds are raw and fresh again.
Don't get me wrong, the sign could have been done without, that I could agree with, but even when we offered to remove just the sign, leaving just the bench, we were told that was not an option and that even close family members (my husband) "may need to be barred from further entry and not have access to our grounds.""

Understanding Memorial Services
These services often involve ceremonies at chapels followed by processions to gravesites for burial. The content highlights a community effort to provide dignity and remembrance for all individuals. Visitors interested in attending such services should look for announcements from organizations like HKYN or funeral care partners.
It's important to note that while these services are deeply meaningful, they also underscore the cemetery's role as a place of active remembrance and community engagement, beyond just individual grave visits.
Groundskeeping and Visitor Experience
One reviewer mentioned that despite cleaning and trimming in May, the cemetery was found in an overgrown and weedy state by July. This lack of consistent maintenance has led to dissatisfaction, as it does not align with what families paid for when choosing the cemetery. The absence of visible management walking the grounds to ensure proper upkeep is also a point of concern.
These issues can detract from the peaceful and respectful atmosphere expected of a cemetery, impacting the ability to clearly read headstones and maintain family plots. Visitors planning a trip may want to be prepared for these conditions or contact the cemetery management in advance to inquire about recent maintenance efforts.
Monument Installation and Cemetery Policies
This situation highlights a rigid adherence to cemetery regulations that can feel impersonal and lacking in empathy during a time of grief. The reviewer expressed extreme disappointment and a feeling of being 'jerked around,' emphasizing the emotional toll such bureaucratic hurdles can take. The cemetery's stance was that they needed to 'line their own pockets' through direct monument sales, rather than allowing external professional installations.
Such experiences underscore the importance for families to thoroughly understand and discuss all cemetery policies regarding memorials, benches, and headstone installations before making arrangements or purchasing monuments. Clear communication and written agreements are crucial to avoid unexpected conflicts and emotional distress.
