"Nice trial system on the south side of the Iowa river. The river is wide enough here that it looks like you are on lake Coralville."

Local trails

My buddy and I were trail running on Woodpecker Trail in Coralville when a fat-tire biker decided to *educate* us about how we were “tearing up the trail” and ruining *his* biking experience. Pretty sure these are public, multi-use trails—as clearly stated on the signs posted…

Quietest/most secluded nature trails?

Hi everyone, What are the quietest trails around the Iowa City area, within a reasonable driving distance? The two I’m aware of are Kent Park and Palisades State Park. Am I missing any? I feel “quiet” can be a subjective experience so I’m open to all opinions. Thanks :)

Mtb trails

Any spots around for mtb near Iowa city? I hit woodpecker and creek side flow trail, along with sugar bottom and was pretty underwhelmed. Looking for more jumps/higher difficulty.

🌿 Watch for Poison Ivy

The wide trails help, but be aware of poison ivy. Stick to the path to avoid contact. Reddit :herb:

Visitors praise Squire Point and Woodpecker Trail for its beautiful Iowa River views and extensive, well-maintained trail network. The opportunity for birdwatching and the unique 'secret beach' are highlights. Some note that hilly sections can be challenging for very young children, and trail etiquette with bikers is important.

"This is a short trail, but part of a larger trail network. Some ups and downs, but nothing too difficult and with some very nice views of the lake."

Paul Jaccod

"Nice trial system on the south side of the Iowa river. The river is wide enough here that it looks like you are on lake Coralville.

There are a bunch of connected trails here - we went in Woodpecker and Mushroom trails. The trail is nice and wide, which is great because there is poison ivy but you generally don’t have to worry about it.

Trail goes up and down a decent amount depending on where you are. There are some nice cliff lookouts on the river that are beautiful. The woods are clear as well in some parts with lovely views.

We went on the trail with a 2 and 4 year old. Hilly areas would have been difficult for the 2 year old (if they weren’t in my pack). 4 year old did fine.

They had a restroom in the parking lot."

"Woodpecker is one of my favorite hiking trails in the Iowa City area. There is parking at the trail head. The trail goes directly the Iowa River and then winds for miles along its banks. There are wonderful views of the river, rock outcroppings, and bridges. There are many birds to watch including bald eagles, and you will see many migrating birds seasonally. The trail is well kept but mostly dirt, and will have roots and rocks in places."
