What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Dutch Harbor is praised for its well-organized mooring fields, clean facilities, and helpful staff, offering beautiful views and sunsets. However, recent changes in management have led to concerns about increased mooring prices and strict policies regarding dinghy dock access, with some visitors finding the town dinghy dock inconvenient. The launch service is generally well-regarded as a reliable alternative.
"Well organized mooring field, attentive launch service. Bathrooms are clean. Dinghy dock requires permit. But doesn't seem tightly enforced, at least for overnight transients. Be careful of winds from the WSW, as there is plenty of sea to that direction for fetch significant waves."

"First the good news....this is a beautiful and generally well protected harbor. The bad news is that you need to know that you can't bring your dinghy to Dutch Harbor Boat Yard's dock. Something that wasn't explained ahead of time. There is a town dinghy dock next door that has a 30 minute limit and is generally inhabited by dozens of teenagers behaving like.......teenagers, need I say more? After some "discussion" with the management of Dutch Harbor Boat Yard, they agreed to let us tie up our dinghy. Don't count on that happening especially when it get busy. They do have what appears to be a fairly efficient launch service, if that works for you. We stayed there based on the recommendations of two other boaters based on their experiences with the previous owners. If you're looking for white sandy beaches on Jamestown forget it, they only have one and it's for town residents only. It wasn't a terrible experience but it wasn't Block Island either. Next time we'll spend the extra money for fuel and go back to Block Island.
Fast forward and Dutch Harbor is under new management. They will let you tie up you dinghy IF there is space available. Don't count on it during the busy season as they have very limited space at the dinghy dock. As previously mentioned they do have a good launch service."

Navigating Dutch Harbor: Moorings vs. Anchoring
Regardless of your choice, the harbor's general protection is a significant advantage. While typically serene, it's important to be aware of the potential for fetch and significant wave action when West-Southwest winds are present. This means that even in a protected harbor, conditions can become choppy, impacting comfort and safety. Always monitor weather forecasts and be prepared for changing conditions during your stay.
Access to shore is a key consideration. While the mooring field is convenient, the policies regarding dinghy docks can be complex. The Dutch Harbor Boat Yard has specific rules, and space is limited, particularly during the busy season. Confirming dinghy dock access in advance is highly recommended. Fortunately, a reliable launch service is available, offering a practical solution for getting to and from shore if dinghy dockage is an issue or if you prefer not to manage your dinghy directly.
