Reviews Summary
While the Cole County Courthouse boasts impressive exterior architecture, visitor experiences inside can be mixed. Some patrons report unhelpful or rude security personnel, alongside accessibility concerns. However, the office staff are generally found to be kind and helpful, making administrative tasks manageable despite initial hurdles.
"Don't go there if you're disabled. Not ADA friendly."
Penny Marshall
"I was greeted in the basement by a very rude security guard. I’m not sure what her name was, some brunette middle aged woman. You're a security guard at a courthouse, there's no reason to act this way. I asked where the county clerks office was and she said, "circuit clerk?" I said no, county clerk. She gave me a hateful look and said room 200. Well, that wasn't the correct room, I wasn't even in the correct building. Thankfully people in that actual room POLITELY told me where I needed to go. And then on my way back out I went back down the stairs past security to go out and the brunette lady told me I needed to go back up the stairs and go out through the turnstile. I said I'm sorry this place isn't marked very well. So then the other security guard, some older white-haired man, told me at the top of the stairs there's a big sign, read it.
I don't know if because I wasn't dressed in a suit they thought that I was there for court, or what their deal was. But having that as my first interaction going into the courthouse was very off-putting. Also, it's not a good look to first see the security guards outside of the doors, smoking.
Someone really needs to train them on how to be friendly to people."
Ashley Bassett
"The actual office workers I’ve talked to are helpful and kind, but when I went in to get a little more clear on the paperwork I needed, I was greeted in the basement by a seriously belligerent security guard. I’m not sure what his name was, some old white haired man, but he was acting pretty childish and rude. Seems like a really pathetic amount of power to go to somebody’s head. I hope someone talks to him and straightens him out, because if he’s the second face someone sees in a place as complicated as a courthouse he needs to expect people to ask questions and be confused."
