Did you know the Missouri State Penitentiary in Jefferson City was once called “the bloodiest 47 acres in America?” By day, this place looks intimidating enough, but after dark? The energy shifts. 👻 I’m a scaredy cat unfortunately married to a man who loves being scared, so I’ve seen plenty of spooky spots (I know, I’m a great wife 😉😂). This is hands down the creepiest place I’ve ever been. And ...

Operating from 1836 to 2004, the Missouri State Penitentiary was the oldest penal facility in operation West of the Mississippi River. The initial prison population was only 15 inmates. Housing unit 4 held prisoners until the day it closed in 2004. Thirty-nine prisoners were executed in the penitentiary's gas chamber. The Missouri State Penitentiary has been a bucket list location for me for man...

Has anyone visited the Missouri State Penatenary?

Went on a 2 hour ghost tour thinking about doing an overnight! This place is one of the coolest places I've toured!! Would love to hear some stories about this place if anyone here has done anytime in this prison. I heard they closed the doors in 2004.

Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about the immersive and chilling experience at the Missouri State Penitentiary Museum, praising the knowledgeable guides and the palpable history. While some found shorter tours too brief, the overall consensus is that it's a must-visit for history and ghost enthusiasts, with many recommending booking in advance due to its popularity.

"Drove 5.5 hours from Nebraska to visit! We went for the 3 hour ghost hunt on Thursday & decided we should go on the History tour on Friday morning. I enjoyed both of them so much & had so much fun. The only thing is I wished I would have done the history tour before the ghost tour! So I would have had more of an understanding of the area! The guides & staff are awesome, super helpful, and full of knowledge about this prison. With the future of this place being unknown I’m so glad we took the time to come visit!"

"Four of us booked a three-hour tour and it was one of the highlights of our weekend. We ended up being part of a group of about thirty guests. The place is creepy and spooky, and we enjoyed hearing some firsthand and secondhand stories about paranormal events as well as some history of the prison and its inmates. During our tour, we had (what could be argued were) some activity, but nothing definitive. It made for a more exciting visit, for sure."

Jeff B

"A group of us, six in all, were joined by 30+ more tourists for an overnight lock-in. We were met by very engaging staff members, and, once the rules were set and buildings discussed, then set free for the remainder of the night.
The site is incredible; the history, the atmosphere, the allure of witnessing paranormal experiences. As with typical experiences, paranormal engagement varies widely from person to person, and cannot truly be "reviewed", but should be experienced for yourself. I would love to attend a more private tour in the future, as the presence of large groups of people, in my experience, diminished the haunting mood.
Be sure to bring extra battery packs, flashlights, and other gear! Leave the sleeping bags at home, you won't be sleeping here."
