Reviews Summary

Ankeny National Wildlife Refuge offers a peaceful natural retreat with a notable Rail Trail boardwalk for exploring wetlands. While praised for its quiet atmosphere and diverse ecosystems, visitors should be aware of the lack of amenities like restrooms and the potential for boardwalk disrepair. Accessibility can also be a concern on some paths.

"This nature area was very appealing especially on the very warm day that we arrived.
The parking area is very plain. There are no restroom facilities or water here other than in the creek which I'm sure would not be drinkable.
The boardwalk out to the blind is in good shape with only one section with a partially missing board. There's also a type of treading material that keeps it from being slippery on wet days.

There was some minor vandalism unfortunately. We went in the mid part of the afternoon and so we could hear birds but not see them. We were treated however to several yellow and black butterflies which we thought might have been swallowtails.
The creek that runs through the area flows fairly rapidly right now.
It's a relaxing walk out to the blind and back and we really enjoyed ourselves but it's not a play area."

"A surprisingly beautiful and quiet place, considering it's so near Salem. I took a cap and wondered around while digesting it. There are heritage farmlands, sacred waterways, and vast wetlands bursting with life.
I wandered by an old creek sluice with remarkable energy, then gazed at a great Celestial Eagle."

Puck Harper

"Only had time for a quick stop do we did the rail trail, very well maintained and plenty of bird activity"
