What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
The Jersey City Free Public Library Main Library is generally well-regarded for its collections, helpful staff, and quiet study spaces. However, some visitors have raised concerns about accessibility for caregivers with strollers and the intensity of air fresheners. Despite these issues, it remains a valuable community resource for book lovers, students, and researchers.
"Moms with strollers beware! This library does NOT accommodate caregivers with small children.
I’ve visited this library many times before, but this was my first time coming as a mother of two under two. I was nervous about the visit because I remembered the stairs, but I was relieved to see an accessible entrance and rang the intercom for assistance.
To my shock, the security guard instructed me to go through the front entrance despite having a double stroller and clearly needing the accessible option. If I hadn’t come all the way from Bayonne for story time, I honestly would’ve turned around and left.
Eventually, the security guard opened the front door—but I was expected to lift and carry my own heavy stroller up the stairs. As a postpartum 5'1" woman with two babies, this was not just difficult—it was dangerous and exhausting. The guard gave minimal help, pushing from below while I struggled from above. I was floored. Why even have an accessible entrance if it’s not actually usable?
I felt ignored, unsupported, and discriminated against. This experience was physically taxing and emotionally upsetting. It's clear that this library has no real plan to support mothers or caregivers who don’t fit a narrow standard of mobility and independence.
Unbelievable and unacceptable. Do better"

"Great place to work and concentrate on your studies, But the toxic chemicals they use to "freshen" the environment is concerning. It seems over the top and I question why that amount of air freshener is being used. When you walk into the library your automatically hit with a powerful artificial scent thats intoxicating. I wish there was a better way because this library is stellar but that smell is nauseating."

"Very well maintained with separate sections with good book collection. I liked the children's section. All staff members are polite and friendly. Good place for the book lovers. They have different timings for each day which are displayed on the main door (check photo of the main door for timings)"
