What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise the park's natural beauty, especially the stunning fall foliage and the scenic Lehigh River. The Lehigh Gorge Trail is a highlight for biking and walking. However, many note significant crowds and challenging parking, particularly on weekends during peak seasons. The closure of the Glen Onoko Falls Trail is a common point of disappointment for hikers seeking waterfalls.
"It is absolutely beautiful here especially in the fall! It’s amazing to see all the beautiful foliage and to hear the water. We went the first weekend in November and it was very crowded which made it a little hard to enjoy everything because there were so many people. Parking was also very challenging. Next time we visit, I hope to come during the week as opposed to the weekend because it was packed. It is beautiful, however, and there is a beautiful path that you can walk or bike in."

"So I should have done this review 5 years ago thats how long I've held onto these pictures. But i gotta say this hike was amazing, the views, the greenery and the purest of water flowing downward was a sight. I suggest you start off to the right its gonna test you on your legs and your strength but the views and the aftermath of it will be worth it."
Daniel Roberts
"Lehigh Gorge State Park has some nice scenic spots, especially along the stream and the biking path that runs through the area. There are a few beautiful places for photos like the “Hole in the Wall,” the mountain views, and some of the colorful graffiti-covered structures.
That said, the main trail we came to see was closed off, and we couldn’t find any other accessible hiking trails besides the one that just follows the water’s edge. I also wasn’t able to find any waterfalls during our visit, which was disappointing.
Until they reopen the closed trail or provide better access to features like the cave lookout, I wouldn’t personally recommend it for hiking. It’s more of a biking or casual strolling area for now, rather than a full outdoor experience."

Exploring the Lehigh Gorge Trail
Cyclists often rave about the smooth surface and the continuous scenic beauty. Many opt for a 'downhill' ride, starting further north and letting gravity assist them towards Jim Thorpe. This is a popular option for families and those who want to cover more ground without strenuous effort. Remember to bring water and snacks, as services along the trail are minimal.
Beyond biking, the trail is perfect for walking, jogging, and even cross-country skiing in the winter. It offers a peaceful way to immerse yourself in the natural environment of the gorge, with the Lehigh River as your constant companion. Keep an eye out for wildlife and the changing seasons that paint the landscape.
The Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway Experience
Tickets for the railway must be purchased in person on the day of travel, and it's advisable to arrive early, particularly during peak times like autumn weekends, as they can sell out. The ride typically lasts about 1.5 hours, covering approximately 16 miles round trip. It's a relaxing way to experience the gorge without the physical exertion of hiking or biking.
While the railway is a major draw, remember that the surrounding town of Jim Thorpe also offers historical charm, shops, and dining. Combining a train ride with a stroll through town makes for a well-rounded day trip. Be aware that the railway operates on a schedule, so plan your visit accordingly.
Hiking and the Glen Onoko Trail Status
Despite the closure, there are still opportunities for hiking. Alternate trails exist that may offer glimpses of the upper falls or provide access to overlooks. However, some visitors have reported not finding accessible waterfalls or feeling that the available trails are limited for a full hiking experience.
