I&M Canal Trail Recommendations

I have a gravel bike, a car, and a free weekend (3/21-22). I'd love to make a loop out of the I&M Canal Trail, but don't know where to start. Seems like some parts are really nice while others are barely accessible. Ideally it would be a loop totaling \~50 miles, but I can…

Good routes to get onto the I&M Canal trail?

Hey folks, I'm up on the North Side and looking to hit the I&M canal. My first thought was to take the LFT all the way down and then find the nearest access point, but I also found a map online that looks like maybe I could skip LFT:…

GIT trail route (Hennepin Canal Pkwy Trail & I&M Canal trails ) after RAGBRAI, on 32mm tires?

Hi all, I'm strongly considering doing RAGBRAI this year (as a first timer) , and afterwards taking a few more days to ride back home to Chicago. This year RAGBRAI ends in Burlington, IA and it looks like the best route home would be to follow the Mississippi River north to the…

Bike Camp Spots on the I&M

I did a ton of searching online for the locations of the bike camps spots on the I&M and was pretty unsuccessful, so either I'm an idiot (definitely possible) or they aren't easy to find. I took the train to Joliet and slow rolled to Kewanee while exploring state parks last…

Reviews Summary

Visitors appreciate the historical significance and the opportunity for wildlife spotting along the I&M Canal State Trail. However, some find the trail surface challenging for road biking and express concerns about safety on certain isolated stretches. Amenities are also noted as being sparse.

"The trail runs nearly arrow-straight for many miles to the SouthWest before it makes a turn at McKinley Woods. The history of the canal is interesting if you are new to the area, but it takes a few miles before you start to feel that you are not still in Joliet. We saw many turtles and several Heron on our 7 mile round trip walk. There is a picnic area off the trail with a pit toilet about 3.5 miles into the trail. The canal water was not moving when we were there in August 2023. There is a wooden cross marking the location where a young man lost his life on a snowmobile about a decade ago. There is no pit toilet at the trailhead."

Paul Machamer

"I used the trail as part of my bicycle trip from Chicago to Springfield."

Derek Michael

"Great access to the trail."
