Reviews Summary

Visitors appreciate the historical significance and the opportunity for wildlife spotting along the I&M Canal State Trail. However, some find the trail surface challenging for road biking and express concerns about safety on certain isolated stretches. Amenities are also noted as being sparse.

"The trail runs nearly arrow-straight for many miles to the SouthWest before it makes a turn at McKinley Woods. The history of the canal is interesting if you are new to the area, but it takes a few miles before you start to feel that you are not still in Joliet. We saw many turtles and several Heron on our 7 mile round trip walk. There is a picnic area off the trail with a pit toilet about 3.5 miles into the trail. The canal water was not moving when we were there in August 2023. There is a wooden cross marking the location where a young man lost his life on a snowmobile about a decade ago. There is no pit toilet at the trailhead."

"I used the trail as part of my bicycle trip from Chicago to Springfield."

Derek Michael

"Great access to the trail."

Navigating the I&M Canal State Trail by Bike

The I&M Canal State Trail is a popular destination for cyclists, but understanding the trail conditions is key to a good experience. The surface is predominantly crushed limestone or packed dirt, which is excellent for hybrid and mountain bikes. However, road bikes with thin tires are generally not recommended, as they can struggle with the uneven terrain and loose gravel, potentially leading to a less comfortable ride or even a fall. Reddit

Many users suggest planning your route based on your bike type. For those with road bikes, sticking to paved sections or nearby roads might be a better option. If you're using a hybrid or mountain bike, you'll find the trail more forgiving. Remember to check the weather forecast, as the trail can become muddy and slippery after rain. Reddit

History and Heritage of the I&M Canal

The Illinois and Michigan Canal, which the state trail follows, is a cornerstone of Illinois history. Completed in 1848, it was a monumental engineering feat that connected the Great Lakes to the Mississippi River system. This waterway was crucial for westward expansion and the growth of Chicago, transforming it into a major transportation hub. The canal facilitated the movement of goods and people, significantly impacting the state's economy and development. Reddit

Walking or biking along the I&M Canal State Trail allows you to tread the same towpaths once used by mules to pull barges. You can still see remnants of the canal's infrastructure, such as old locks and locktender's houses, which serve as tangible links to this bygone era. The trail itself is a testament to the canal's enduring legacy, preserving a piece of American industrial and transportation history for recreational use. Reddit

Interpretive signs along the trail provide insights into the canal's construction, operation, and the communities that sprang up along its banks. Understanding this history enriches the experience, turning a simple bike ride or walk into an educational journey through a pivotal chapter of the Midwest's past. Reddit

Wildlife and Nature on the Trail

The I&M Canal State Trail offers a surprisingly rich natural experience, especially for those who take the time to observe. The canal's waters and the surrounding wetlands and woodlands provide habitats for a variety of wildlife. Birdwatchers often find success here, with numerous species of waterfowl, songbirds, and raptors making their home in the area. Reddit

Keep a keen eye on the water's edge and the canal banks, as turtles are a common sight, basking in the sun. Herons and other wading birds are also frequently spotted, gracefully navigating the shallow waters in search of food. The trail's relatively undeveloped stretches, particularly away from the immediate urban areas of Joliet, offer a peaceful environment for these creatures to thrive. Reddit

While the trail is primarily a recreational path, its ecological value is significant. It acts as a wildlife corridor, connecting different natural areas and allowing for the movement of animals. Respecting the natural environment by staying on the trail and not disturbing wildlife will help preserve this habitat for future visitors and the animals themselves. Reddit
