"Absolutely Breathtaking — A Must-See Alaska Experience
Visiting Tracy Arm–Fords Terror Wilderness was hands down one of the most jaw-dropping experiences of our Alaska cruise. If you’re even thinking about cruising this area — do it.
We cruised deep into the fjord surrounded by towering cliffs, countless waterfalls cascading from melting snow, and icebergs silently drifting through the turquoise water. I even caught some of it in a time-lapse that still gives me goosebumps every time I watch it.
One of the most unforgettable moments was seeing the massive, U-shaped valleys that were clearly carved by glaciers. You can almost feel the history in the rocks. The sheer scale of nature here is humbling — everything feels untouched and ancient.

🧊 Icebergs floating beside the ship
🏔 Glacial-carved cliffs surrounding you
🌲 Lush green contrasting with snow and rock
We spent most of our time on deck just soaking it all in — cameras barely do it justice, but I’ve attached a few of our favorite shots plus a time-lapse to give you a taste.
If you’re cruising through Alaska, do not miss this spot. It’s peaceful, powerful, and pure wilderness at its best."

"Absolutely STUNNING! One of the highlights of our cruise! Given the chance to ever go back, we would take the excursion that takes you up close to the Dawes glacier, but even at slight distance on the cruise ship, we got some fantastic views as the sun broke out just right to light it up! Again, breathtakingly BEAUTIFUL!"

"I have only cruised through Tracy Arm twice, and one of those times we didn't enter the fjord itself due to ice presence. The weather also varied, as it tends to in Alaska. We experienced mirror like calm waters on one approach with brilliant reflections and blue skies. When we entered the arm itself, it was cloudy but with bright patches that made the fjord walls shine with greenery. We did not get as far as the Glacier but we did see some magnificent rocks walls and waterfalls on both sides. We saw several bus sized ice bergs that had broken off the glacier and where floating out to sea. Well worth cruising, and the calmer the weather the better."

Independent travel to Tracy Arm Fjord is challenging due to its remote location. It's best accessed through organized tours or cruise ship excursions from Juneau.

Tour costs vary significantly depending on the operator, duration, and type of vessel. Cruise ship excursions can range from a few hundred dollars, while independent boat tours or kayaking trips might be more or less. It's best to research specific tour providers for current pricing.
As a designated wilderness area, there are no direct entrance fees. However, the cost of accessing it via cruise or tour boat is your primary expense.

📸 📸 Photography
Use a wide-angle lens to capture the vastness of the fjords and glaciers. Consider a polarizing filter to enhance the blue hues of the ice and water. Be prepared for low light conditions and fast-changing weather.
Focus on the textures and the incredible blue colors within the ice. Try to include elements like waterfalls or cliffs in the background for scale. Be patient, as the light can dramatically change the appearance of the ice.
Absolutely! While dedicated tours offer closer access, cruise ships provide excellent vantage points for capturing the grandeur of the fjords, glaciers, and waterfalls. Utilize your ship's deck space for unobstructed views.
The primary challenges include rapidly changing weather, low light conditions, and the sheer scale of the landscape, which can be difficult to convey in a single image. Motion from the boat can also be a factor.
A tripod can be helpful for capturing stable shots in low light or for time-lapses, but it can be cumbersome on a moving boat. Consider a monopod or image stabilization if portability is a concern.
For Different Travelers
Tailored advice for your travel style
👨👩👧 Families with Kids
For families with older children who are comfortable with a bit more adventure, boat tours that get closer to the icebergs can be incredibly exciting. Keep an eye out for wildlife like seals and eagles, which are always a hit with kids. While kayaking might be too strenuous for younger children, it's an option for adventurous teens. Pack plenty of snacks and drinks, as options can be limited once you're out on the water.
🚢 Cruise Passengers
Dress warmly and in layers, as it can be significantly colder out on the water. Bring binoculars to spot wildlife and get a closer look at the glaciers. Even if your ship doesn't go deep into the fjord, the sail-by offers stunning views of the dramatic scenery. Be prepared for potential itinerary changes due to ice conditions, as noted by some travelers.
📸 Photography Enthusiasts
Be prepared for challenging lighting conditions due to the often overcast skies and the deep shadows cast by the towering cliffs. A wide-angle lens is essential for capturing the vastness of the fjords. Consider bringing a sturdy tripod or monopod for stability, especially if you plan on shooting in lower light. Time-lapses of the glaciers calving or the ship's maneuvers can also be incredibly effective.

Understanding the Tracy Arm-Fords Terror Wilderness
The wilderness area is part of the larger Tongass National Forest, the largest national forest in the United States. Its remote location means it's primarily accessible by boat or floatplane, making the journey an integral part of the experience. Visitors can expect to see towering waterfalls, massive icebergs, and potentially marine mammals like seals and whales, as well as bald eagles.
Key features of the Tracy Arm-Fords Terror Wilderness include its active tidewater glaciers, such as the Dawes Glacier in Endicott Arm and the South Sawyer Glacier near Tracy Arm. These glaciers are constantly calving ice, creating a dynamic and ever-changing landscape. The sheer scale of the natural formations here is humbling, offering a profound sense of wilderness and untouched beauty that many travelers find deeply moving.
Navigating Tracy Arm: Cruise Ships vs. Smaller Tours
Smaller expedition boats and tour operators departing from Juneau offer a more intimate encounter. These vessels can often navigate closer to the glaciers and icebergs, and some may even offer opportunities for wildlife spotting or educational talks. For the truly adventurous, kayaking tours provide an unparalleled, up-close experience, allowing you to paddle among icebergs and explore hidden coves. However, kayaking requires a higher level of physical fitness and is subject to weather conditions.
Reddit users often discuss the trade-offs. Some appreciate the convenience and grandeur of a cruise ship visit, while others strongly recommend opting for a smaller boat tour for a more personal and immersive experience. Regardless of your choice, booking in advance is crucial, especially for popular kayaking excursions, as they tend to fill up quickly.
