What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise the Turtle Bay Coastal Trail for its stunning ocean views, especially from the pillbox, and the chance to spot sea turtles. The easy accessibility and beautiful sunset vistas are frequently mentioned positives. However, some note that the trail can be hard to find if you're not specifically looking for it, and certain areas, particularly around the pillbox, can have an unpleasant smell.
"I really enjoyed the walk out to the pill box. It’s got some beautiful views out at the pill box and also along the way. My family and I really enjoyed this and plan on making it a regular adventure of ours."
Ashley Decker
"An awesome little "hike" from the Landfarm fruit stand brings you past a beautiful local beach and horse trail to the Turtle Bay pillbox.
There's not much going on here and if you're not specifically looking for it, it's very easy to miss as the main trail seems to not bring you directly to it. There's some amazing views of the pacific here, just make sure you have good footing if you want to go out on the lava rocks because it's pretty jagged and there's some crevices to fall into."

"Nice place to have a good look on the entire turtle bay and a great view on sunset. Easy to reach through a small walk through the different beaches."

Exploring the Coastal Trail
Many visitors highlight the hike to the pillbox as a must-do. This relatively short and easy trek rewards hikers with expansive vistas of the entire Turtle Bay. The terrain can be uneven in places, particularly on the lava rocks, so wearing appropriate footwear is crucial for safety. The trail is also known for its potential to spot Honu (green sea turtles), especially in the mornings when they are often seen near the shore.
For those looking for a more immersive experience, consider exploring the various beaches that dot the coastline. These offer different perspectives of the bay and can be great spots for a picnic or simply to relax and soak in the atmosphere. The trail is a wonderful place to witness a Hawaiian sunset, with the sky often erupting in a spectacular display of colors over the ocean.
Marine Life Encounters
Beyond turtles, the rocky shores and clear waters provide a habitat for various seabirds and smaller marine species. Snorkelers might find interesting underwater formations and fish if they venture into calmer sections of the bay. While the trail itself is primarily for walking, the adjacent waters offer a glimpse into the vibrant underwater ecosystem of Oahu's North Shore.
Remember to observe wildlife from a respectful distance and avoid disturbing their natural behavior. The chance to see these animals in their natural habitat is a truly special part of the Turtle Bay experience.
