What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about the absolutely breathtaking views from the Lanikai Pillbox Hike, calling it an unforgettable experience with classic Hawaii vibes. While the hike is steep and requires good footwear, the panoramic vistas of turquoise waters and lush greenery are consistently praised as being well worth the effort. Parking can be a challenge, and the trail isn't suitable for everyone, but the scenery makes it a highly recommended adventure.
"The trail itself is great! No parking at the trail head so we parked at Lanikai Beach and walked 0.6 miles to the trail head. The trail was dusty so a little slippery but the rock, roots, and ropes made the initial incline doable. Some flat open spaces with fantastic breezes were much appreciated after the rock scrambles. Take sunscreen, water and some snacks and enjoy a little break at the top of the pillboxes."

"The Lanikai Pillbox Hike is an unforgettable experience that’s full of those classic Hawai’i vibes with breathtaking ocean views, turquoise waters, and lush greenery everywhere you look. The trail itself isn’t long, it’s a pretty steep incline most of the way up, and definitely not an easy stroll. It’s best for those who are comfortable with hiking and can stably walk and climb. There’s no wheelchair or stroller access, so it’s not the right trail for everyone.
Parking can be a bit of a challenge since there’s no official lot. Most people end up parking in the nearby residential areas or even down by Lanikai Beach, which means a bit of a walk uphill before you even start the hike. Just be super mindful of the local neighborhood but don’t block driveways and respect the homes around you. Overall highly recommended this hike if you are able!
That said, once you make it to the top, the views are absolutely worth it. You’ll get a stunning panoramic look at the ocean, the Mokulua Islands, and the coastline below. It’s one of those hikes where the reward totally matches the effort, and the scenery at the top feels like a postcard brought to life."

"We did this hike quite quick because we had good hiking boots. It becomes quite vertical from the very beginning but since it hadn’t rained the ground was dry, having good traction. The hardest part is the sun blazing on you. Have plenty of water and good shoes and you’ll get there quick. The breeze at the top was absolutely amazing."
