Reviews Summary

This hike is widely hailed as one of the best on Kauai, with many calling it the best hike they've ever done. Visitors rave about the stunning Napali Coast views and the spectacular waterfall, especially the refreshing swim in its plunge pool. However, the trail is challenging, with significant elevation changes, muddy conditions, and multiple stream crossings that can be difficult and time-consuming.

"Best hike I’ve ever done. 8 miles round trip (4 miles there). If able to go on a slightly rainy or overcast day may be helpful to keep it cool.

It’s a pretty challenging hike. And the last 0.25-0.4 miles of the way there is even harder. But doable if you’re in reasonable shape.

They recommend 3 liters of water per person. Can likely do 2 liters per person. Less than that is not advisable.

The falls are the best part and great to swim at.

Best part of our 2 week vacation in Hawaii. Would definitely do it again."

Stephen Germana

"Hike is no joke especially right after a rain storm, but the waterfall and pool make it worthwhile. I went thru 1 liter of water on the out and back hike which took nearly 4hrs. It had stormed hard the day before the hike, so the trail was muddy and slippery leading to a much longer trip than planned, so take your time. Oh and you will try to avoid the water and pick your steps on rocks thru the streams, but just give up and get your feet wet."

Jeff Abbott

"Best hike I've ever done!! I sweated a ton coming from a drier climate but it wasn't too warm and cooling off in the waterfall was super refreshing. Just bring plenty of water. Online the information said this hike was super technical and steep. A few sections required some technical navigating but as a frequent hiker this was not anything crazy. Was able to book a parking spot a month in advance online, however with a possible impending hurricane we did end up paying for the shuttle ($40/person) as we did not want to miss this part of our trip! Can see how cost would be a barrier, particularly for a family. Smooth process catching the shuttle back. They have bigger shuttles that come frequently in the later afternoon. Enjoy!!"

The Kalalau Trail: A Gateway to Paradise

The Hanakapi'ai Falls Trail is actually the first 4 miles (out and back) of the legendary Kalalau Trail, which stretches 11 miles along Kauai's breathtaking Napali Coast. While the full Kalalau Trail requires overnight permits and is a serious backpacking endeavor, the hike to Hanakapi'ai Falls and Beach offers a taste of its unparalleled beauty for day hikers. Instagram+1

This section of the trail is known for its dramatic elevation changes, traversing lush valleys and rugged ridges. You'll encounter multiple stream crossings, which can range from ankle-deep to waist-high depending on recent rainfall. The trail itself can become muddy and slippery, especially after rain, making sturdy footwear and a hiking stick highly recommended. InstagramReddit

Despite the challenges, the rewards are immense. The iconic Napali Coast views are constant companions, and the destination – Hanakapi'ai Falls – is a spectacular reward. It's a hike that truly immerses you in the wild, untamed beauty of Kauai. Instagram+1

Navigating Stream Crossings and Trail Conditions

One of the most talked-about aspects of the Hanakapi'ai Falls Trail is the stream crossings. As you venture beyond Hanakapi'ai Beach, you'll encounter several streams that feed into the ocean. These crossings are an integral part of the experience, and many hikers advise simply embracing the wetness. Reddit

'Just give up and get your feet wet,' is a common sentiment shared by those who have completed the hike. While you can try to hop across rocks, the most practical approach is often to wade through the water, which can be knee-to-waist deep. Wearing quick-drying shoes or water shoes is a smart move. Reddit

Trail conditions can vary significantly. After rain, the trail becomes notoriously muddy and slippery, turning what might be a moderate hike into a more technical challenge. This can also increase the time it takes to complete the hike. Checking the weather forecast and being prepared for slick surfaces is key to a safe and enjoyable trek. InstagramReddit

The Reward: Hanakapi'ai Falls and Its Plunge Pool

The ultimate destination for this hike is the magnificent Hanakapi'ai Falls, a towering cascade dropping 300-400 feet into a serene plunge pool. This is where many hikers find their moment of pure bliss, cooling off from the strenuous trek. InstagramReddit

The waterfall itself is a spectacle, and swimming in the pool beneath it is an unforgettable experience. Be prepared for the water to be very cold, a refreshing shock after the humid hike. Some visitors even don wetsuit tops or snorkel gear to better withstand the chill and enhance their experience. Reddit

Swimming out under the powerful curtain of water is described as an 'amazing feeling' by those who have done it. It's a chance to connect with the raw power of nature and feel truly invigorated. Just remember that while the falls are a swimming paradise, the surf at Hanakapi'ai Beach is extremely dangerous and should be avoided. Reddit
