"Awesome awesomeness and I am NOT a train fan. Lookout where you watch the trains follow the circular tracks and head towards the tunnels."

Most people drive past it without knowing what they’re missing. The Tehachapi Loop is a railway spiral that makes trains pass over themselves to climb mountains. Built in 1876, it’s a 0.73-mile curve that gains 77 feet in elevation while keeping the grade manageable. Long freight trains literally cross over their own tracks. The engine passes above the rear cars of the same train. Nearly 40...

Have you ever heard of the Tehachapi Railroad Loop? This was a first for us! This loop is to help low down trains traveling throughout the mountains. An average of 36 trains pass through here each day. We were able to see 2! The first train came through and just stopped. Next thing you know, you heard a train horn and another, smaller, train came passing through. The train that came to a stop wa...

Reviews Summary

Visitors are consistently amazed by the engineering marvel of the Tehachapi Loop, especially when they witness a train crossing over itself. The historical significance and the opportunity for unique photography are major draws. However, some find parking limited and the official viewpoint can be crowded, leading some to suggest watching videos online for a better perspective.

"My interests were to take photos of this 1874-76 civil engineering accomplishment .
I started by visiting the museum which is very interesting and well commented by an excellent guide, himself a railroad man.
then I drove along to take photos of the trains around the loops. Access to photos points are limited as private properties surroundThe tracks. Still worth the experience. Sunset time is the best and autumnal colors are terrific."

"Awesome awesomeness and I am NOT a train fan. Lookout where you watch the trains follow the circular tracks and head towards the tunnels. (3 consecutive tunnels viewed from northbound) If you get to the lookout and there isn’t a train you may have to wait a few minutes but I read they come by frequently."

Elaine Creech

"If you're any sort of train nerd, from hardcore rail fan to fondly remembering your train set as a kid, this place is cool. I arrived at the top viewing area just as a train that was stopped blew the horn and was moving down the loop again. Once it's wrapped around, it disappears through the tunnel. Lots of people at this viewpoint.

I figured out there's also a spot to view this from the bottom tunnel entrance. By the time I got there, the same train was no longer looped and was exiting the last few cars from the tunnel on the way down the hill. Also, NO other people at this viewpoint.

Over the course of screwing around in the beautiful scenery and finding the Cesar Chavez memorial down the road, I noticed another train heading up the hill. I hurried back to the tunnel entrance and took a ten minute video of the whole 4+2 engine BNSF freight train in full diesel tilt going up through the loop."
