What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about the educational and inspiring nature of the JPL Visitor Center tours, particularly highlighting the fascinating Clean Room and knowledgeable guides. However, the extreme difficulty in securing reservations months in advance is a significant point of frustration for many, leading to disappointment for those unable to get tickets.
"I was doing my own Big Bang Theory tour in Pasadena so I wanted to drive by JPL since thats where Howard works on the show. I assumed there'd be a guard (which there was) so I was only able to take some pictures of the outside, but they said there is a tour (you just have to sign up ahead of time) so I would love to come back and do that sometime."

"Went on the tour and it was definitely worth the wait. It takes a while to find a reservation spot online but keep trying. Tour guides Curtis and Mark were super helpful, informative, and friendly. They walk you through a portion of the campus and you get to see some cool locations and a small museum."

"Calling it a museum is a misnomer. If you think "visitor center" means like the visitor center of a National Park, you are again wrong. You cannot visit it without an appointment. The only thing to do is the tour and you have to book the tour months in advance. There are also no walk-in spots on the tour in case some previously booked visitors could not make it because we were told that JPL security requires 3 weeks to do background checks on tour visitors. Giving it a one star simply because I didn't actually get to see it. We were turned away at the gate with the guard telling us ' we don't allow random visitors'."

The JPL Tour Experience
One of the most anticipated parts of the tour is a visit to the Clean Room. This is where sensitive spacecraft components are assembled and tested in an ultra-clean environment to prevent contamination. Seeing this sterile, high-tech facility firsthand offers a unique perspective on the precision required for space missions. Be prepared for a lot of walking and stairs, so comfortable footwear is a must.
It's crucial to understand that JPL is an active research and development facility, not a traditional tourist attraction. Access is highly controlled, and booking tours months in advance is non-negotiable. Security is paramount, with background checks required for visitors. This means spontaneous visits are not possible, and you must plan ahead to secure a spot.
Planning Your Visit: Booking and Logistics
When you arrive for your tour, be prepared for strict security checks at the gate. You will need to present identification and confirm your reservation. The tour itself involves a considerable amount of walking and navigating stairs, so wearing comfortable shoes is highly recommended. While the tours are free, the effort required to secure a reservation is the main 'cost' for visitors.
Remember that JPL is a working laboratory. While the tours offer a fascinating glimpse into their operations, they are not designed for casual drop-ins. The experience is best suited for those with a genuine interest in space exploration and a willingness to plan ahead for this unique opportunity.
