Reviews Summary

Visitors find Bent's Old Fort a fascinating historical site, especially for those interested in the Santa Fe Trail and frontier life. Many praise the reconstructed fort and the informative guided tours. However, some have experienced confusion regarding access, fees, and tour availability, suggesting clear communication from staff is key. InstagramReddit

"Fascinating bit of history here. I am a huge fan of the miniseries Centennial and felt like this was a familiar place. Well come to find out some of that show was filmed here. We were not able to catch one of the tours but the parts of the fort you could walk through were amazing."

Richard S

"This was a very odd interaction. I've been to numerous NPS sites. There were 3 rangers there. They didn't provide any information except that you can't be vmclose to it due to the condition of the fort. It also wasn't a day they provided guided tours. I guess that's where you would learn more about the fort. I think it's free to visit. I have a pass, but they said they don't take passes, they are a pay only site, but it was free that day. That didn't sound quite right to me, but oh well. We walked around for a few minutes to see what we could and walked back up the trail. If you're in the area, I'd stop. I'm not sure I would travel much out of the way to see it though"

Jana West

"Bent's Old Fort is a must see if your visiting southern Colorado. If you like western US history and the westward expansion of pioneers. Stop in to the souvenir store in back of the fort before you leave."

The History of Bent's Old Fort

Bent's Old Fort, established in 1833 by brothers William and Charles Bent and their partner Ceran St. Vrain, was a pivotal trading post on the Santa Fe Trail. It served as a crucial nexus for commerce and cultural exchange between American traders, Mexican merchants, and various Native American tribes, including the Cheyenne and Arapaho. The fort's adobe construction was well-suited to the arid climate and provided a secure base for operations. Instagram

The fort was more than just a commercial enterprise; it was a multicultural hub. Here, buffalo robes were traded for manufactured goods, fostering relationships and sometimes conflict. The fort's strategic location and its role in facilitating trade made it a significant landmark in the westward expansion of the United States. Its influence waned with changing trade dynamics and the eventual decline of the buffalo herds, leading to its abandonment and partial destruction in the mid-19th century. Instagram

The reconstruction of Bent's Old Fort National Historic Site allows visitors to step back in time and experience this vibrant period.
