Visitors find Lake Josephine Scrub Preserve to be a wonderfully peaceful and remote natural escape, offering a genuine Florida scrub experience at a very low cost. While some note litter and a lack of facilities like restrooms, the abundant birdlife, unique ecosystem, and serene lake views make it a worthwhile destination for nature lovers seeking tranquility.
"A little bit out of the way makes this a quiet place. Stopped for a picnic lunch in the covered tables. Lots of birds, dragon flies, and butterflies. Also visited by a gopher tortoise who came out of the scrub, ate some leaves, and went back! Beautiful trees draped in Spanish moss."
Phil Evans
"It was very, very peaceful out there today. A couple people were enjoying the path and another couple was at the picnic table. We didn't see any animals, not even a bird! We did see litter at the lake and on the trail. May or may not visit it again one day. It costs only $2 to visit this little park area in some true Florida scrub."
Jennifer Corley
"If you are a nature freak and love exploring new places. This is a must. But be sure to come with a partner as there are bears 🐻 in the park. They are most active during dusk and dawn. Bring bear spray if you go on the hiking trails. This place has a really nice view of the lake. One thing I didn't like was that at shore there where lots of mosquitoes (I went in August). It is so peaceful. There are a couple tables if you wish to have a picnic with family under shaded area."

Navigating the Florida Scrub Ecosystem
Exploring the preserve offers a chance to witness the intricate web of life within the scrub. Keep an eye out for butterflies and dragonflies flitting among the vegetation, and listen for the calls of various bird species, including reports of eagles and doves. The presence of gopher tortoises is also a highlight, as these gentle creatures are a keystone species in scrub environments. Remember that this is a wild area, and while peaceful, it's important to be aware of your surroundings and respect the natural habitat.
For those interested in a deeper understanding, the preserve provides a relatively undisturbed glimpse into this often-overlooked Florida ecosystem. It’s a place where the subtle beauty of the scrub can be appreciated, from the textures of the sand to the resilience of the plant life. The spring season is noted for its moving water, adding another dynamic element to the natural scenery.
Wildlife Encounters: What to Expect and How to Prepare
Beyond the smaller creatures, visitors have reported sightings of gopher tortoises emerging from the scrub. More significantly, there are mentions of bears in the park, particularly active during dusk and dawn. This necessitates a cautious approach, especially if you plan to hike the trails during these times. Travelers recommend bringing bear spray for added safety. Other wildlife signs, such as evidence of wild boar, have also been noted.
While the wildlife encounters can be thrilling, it's important to maintain a safe distance and avoid disturbing the animals. The preserve's remote nature means you're more likely to have undisturbed views. Be prepared for mosquitoes, especially in warmer months like August, and consider appropriate repellent.
