Word on the street is that the Watkins Museum of History will be offering several history walking tours this summer with local tour guides, Dr. Bob Dinsdale and Andrew Morris. We had the opportunity to go on a walking tour with Dr. Dinsdale for a staff field trip in early June and had a great time. Dr. Dinsdale’s tour was informative and eye-opening, even for those of us who are longtime locals. S...

Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise the Watkins Museum of History for its engaging exhibits, welcoming atmosphere, and free admission. Many highlight the interactive elements, particularly the playhouse and audio maps, as great for families. While some note it focuses more on Lawrence than Douglas County broadly, the overall sentiment is overwhelmingly positive, with many recommending it as a must-visit for local history enthusiasts.

"Lotta local history didn't have the stuff i was looking for (more lawrence than Douglas county here) but very good people the lady at the front greeted us and was very polite. One of the few places I felt comfortable as a republican which says alot about how nice they were. I hope to comeback and see more exhibits open. Being a Lawrence native I knew much of it but my wife loved the interactive maps with audio paired we went through each one hearing the stories. Favorite part was the play house!!!"

"A beautiful, historical bldg. Quite a detailed set of permanent exhibits. And they have 4 rotating exhibits so always come back to see what's new. I had just an hour to spend here, it was enough to thoroughly examine one exhibit and most of another. The rest I just quickly looked at. Plan an afternoon to enjoy it leisurely. Then enjoy the local food places there are several very close by."
