Timing is Everything

The Timberline Lake Trail can get crowded, especially during peak summer. Consider visiting on a weekday or early in the morning to avoid the biggest crowds and enjoy a more serene experience. Be prepared for variable weather, even in summer, and pack layers.

Trail Conditions & Navigation

Snow can linger on higher sections of the trail well into summer, making navigation tricky around Bear Lake. Downloading an offline map or using a navigation app is highly recommended. Water crossings are common and can require removing shoes, so water shoes are a good idea.

How's the hitch to Leadville from other than from Tennessee Pass?

I want to resupply in Leadville later than Tennessee Pass and I see two options. Timberline Lake TH on CR-9, FS-104 (mile 156) or at Mt. Massive TH on FS-110 (mile 169). How are these spots for getting a ride? Is one easier than the other?

Reviews Summary

Visitors praise the Timberline Lake Trail for its stunning alpine scenery and the beauty of Timberline Lake itself. The trail offers refreshing water crossings and opportunities to see wildflowers. However, some find the trail challenging due to rocky sections, potential snow obscuring the path, and limited parking.

"Great trail, but not recommended for bikes. The trail to the North is mostly in Wilderness terrain and off limits to bicycles while the trail heading South allows bikes, it's so rocky it isn't fun and is mostly hike a bike. At time of posting, the parking lot is closed, so you have to park out on the road and hike in. Beautiful location! Trail to North disappears into the snow, so be mindful of where you are as its very easy to get off trail and lost about 4 miles in around Bear Lake as of June 8th."

Caleb Smith

"Nice trail. LOTS of people, dogs, and even a lady with a herd of goats I ish you not. Pretty mellow except maybe the last quarter mile which is a nasty little climb. Totally worth doing, lots of water on trail. I wore water shoes and it was perfect."

joshua coats

"Was out in Leadville visiting family and decided to start a hike here. We went up to Bear Lake and the views were incredible! The first segment of the hike was exhausting as you are climbing the entire time, but totally worth it! Would absolutely go back thru again."
