What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise Alum Creek Dam for its scenic beauty, recreational opportunities, and historical significance. The long walking path on the dam is a highlight for exercise and enjoying lake views. While some note the lack of shade and amenities directly on the dam, the surrounding state park offers beaches, trails, and picnic areas, making it a well-rounded destination for outdoor activities and family outings.
"Stopped by the visitor center to learn the history of the Alum Creek Dam that was built by the US Army Corps of Engineers in the early 1970's. It was interesting to learn how this dam and the other dams in the area all combine to work together and water management and flood control.
The dam is about 1 1/4 miles long from end to end. We walked from the visitor center to the actual dam.
The views of the lake are fantastic. I really liked looking down from the dam at the spillway and watching the water flow down!
It is a dam, so no shade and no where to sit along the dam. But there are shaded trails at the end.
There is a parking lot at the end of the dam or you can park at the visitor center and walk 1/4 mile to the start of the dam.
It was a very hot day when we visited, so the dam was a great place to turn around!"

"Great place to exercise or chill out by yourself or with friends / family. The dam has a river following the overflow of the dam, benches for picnic or viewing the river, playgrounds for the kids, stairs for workout, and hiking trails on top of the dam for pictures of the overlook or catch the breeze air. There’s some crawfish on the edge of the river in case you wonder what’s on the pathway. If you’re coming to Columbus from the north on 71, check out Alum Creek Dam. All in all, Alum Creek State Park is a great place to chill, especially the marina where you can rent boats, dine in, or get your fishing license for fishing."
