What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Cary Library is a highly regarded community resource, praised for its extensive collections and vibrant atmosphere. While many appreciate the diverse events and updated facilities, some visitors note concerns about noise levels, parking fees, and ongoing renovations. Efforts are being made to enhance the library experience for all patrons.
"I would like to express some concerns regarding the current state of the library environment.
First, the carpet is very old and has developed an unpleasant odor, including a musty smell that suggests mold. Given that Lexington is a community with high taxes, it is surprising that the library floor has not yet been replaced with hardwood or another material that is more sanitary and resistant to mold. Such an improvement would greatly enhance the health and comfort of patrons.
Second, the seating arrangement also presents challenges. Most of the desks are positioned directly against the windows, which makes studying uncomfortable. Proper desk space is essential for reading and writing, and a more thoughtful layout would significantly improve the usability of the library.
In addition, I was concerned about staff interactions when I briefly moved a chair. Even after assuring the staff that I would return it after use, I was repeatedly asked to place it back immediately. I believe that patrons should be trusted to use the space responsibly, and an atmosphere of mutual respect would create a more welcoming environment.
Another issue is parking. Since the library is funded by taxpayers, it is difficult to understand why parking tickets must be paid by residents using the facility. It would be far more reasonable to allow extended parking for library users, rather than requiring them to move their cars every two hours. This policy makes it unnecessarily burdensome for patrons to spend meaningful time in the library.
Finally, I would like to mention the noise level. On one occasion, library staff were holding a meeting in one of the rooms, but the conversation was so loud that it disrupted the quiet environment expected in a library. It was ironic that the staff themselves, rather than the patrons, were the source of the disturbance.
I share these points not as criticism, but in the hope that improvements can be made to ensure that the library continues to be a clean, quiet, and truly welcoming place for all members of the community."

"Always too noisy as being an older person On will never get used to people talking as if they are on the street in a library. Lexington is making accomodations for those with no respect of how libraries actually are meant to be!"

"Cary Library is ranked in the top 100 libraries for a town the size of Lexington in the entire country. The Cary sisters were incredibly generous when they endowed this library well over 100 years ago. Today Cary Library is thriving and I can always find absolutely any book or magazine that I’m looking for. The library has grown and prospered since it’s founding and today it many times larger than the original building. Come visit this wonderful community resource and spend a day they just exploring. All the best - Robert"
