Reviews Summary
Little St. Simons Island is lauded as an outstanding, one-of-a-kind eco-resort experience, perfect for nature lovers. "(This is an unpaid review.)
My husband and I just returned from The Lodge on Little St. Simon Island (LSSI). It was an outstanding, one of a kind, amazing experience. This is certainly a 5-star eco-resort facility - perfect for anyone who loves the outdoors and appreciates the almost untouched Georgia coast. Look at their website before booking because it contains all the information you need to prepare.
We stayed Sept 12-16, 2021. We got lucky with almost perfect weather and were able to explore the whole island. We spent time with the Naturalists on activities, but also adventured independently to bird watch, beach comb, kayak, hike, ride bikes, and fish. The entire staff is hands down great. I was especially impressed by the kitchen staff, who were accommodating to my dietary needs. The food was delicious (especially the desserts - just outstanding!).
A few details to know before going:
- Insects/mosquitos: LSSI does not treat for insects, so there are bugs, but they do NOT ruin the experience. My advice - be prepared. Pretreat your hiking/outing clothing with permethrin before leaving home and wear long sleeves and pants everywhere. A variety of bug sprays are provided, and if you want the best coverage use the highest % DEET available. If the bugs are really bad, put on a bug net, which are provided by the facility.
- Packing: We visited in mid-September. My advice is to bring clothes that will protect from the bugs and the sun - so long sleeves, long pants, hat, neck gaiter. I wore my hiking boots the most, but would have liked having strapped sandals (ie Teva, Keen) for in the kayaks or walking on the beach. If you choose to participate in activities you will get sweaty, but they have laundry machines which is very helpful! During summer months bring a bathing suit for the pool and/or the beach.
- Biking: Practice your bike skills before heading to LSSI. I have not ridden a bike in 10+ years, and was a little wabbly at first. The "roads" are not paved, so expect to ride over roots and though gravel and sand, or over grass. It's really not bad once you get used to it. The road down to the beach is about 2 miles, and takes about 15-20 minutes on the bike. My husband and I did it in the dark with headlamps to see the sunrise over the beach. If you are not comfortable on the bike, you're a bit more limited because you'll need to ride with the Naturalists. This should not be a deal breaker if you want to visit, because the staff is incredibly accommodating and will help you get around!
- Food. The food is delicious! Chef Amy and the kitchen staff bend over backward to make amazing meals and baked goods. Remember that it's an island - they can only receive deliveries a few days per week and storage is limited, so there are not a million options. If you have special needs, be sure to communicate in advance to allow the staff to prepare!
- Car service from Savannah. We used Seaside Transport, LLC to arrange a ride from Savannah to LSSI and back. The owner, Ray, was very responsive via email, making scheduling a breeze. Our driver, Brian, was on time, kind and an excellent conversationalist.
Overall, it's actually really difficult to describe how awesome this place is. I can't wait to go back"
Sara B.
"Overall it is a nice place. Ideally you could enjoy being outside, but the mosquitos ruin it. Unless you are going to bathe in chemicals constantly the mosquitos are miserable.
-Accommodations- We stayed in the river lodge and it was comfortable and clean. The only issue there is a lot of condensation on the vents and it is causing mold. Also the septic systems on the property need work. You can smell sewage walking near the cabins.
-Activities- Great! We went seining, river fishing, and dock fishing. All were good.
-Food- The food tasted good, but was mostly junk food. The food was not what I expected. We eat very healthy and with the emphasis on farm to table I expected a lot more vegetables. You can order things a certain way, which I learned later. Just be sure to review the menu and let them know.
- We would return if it weren't for mosquitos."
Jennifer Burgener
"What an incredible place! We've been wanting to go to LSSI for years and so happy to have finally made it. It's a slice of paradise....with so much attention to the guest experience. From the excellent food, to the knowledgeable naturalists and fun activities, a great experience all around. Not to mention the stunning sunsets from River Lodge! It's definitely not for everyone (it is a natural environment after all, and yes, there are plenty of mosquitoes) but it certainly left us planning our return. Can't say enough great things about the staff...courteous, professional, knowledgeable, accommodating, kind...you name it. Thanks again...we definitely missed it the minute we left."

Navigating the Island's Unpaved Paths
Biking is a primary mode of transport for many guests, offering a fantastic way to cover ground and experience the island's diverse ecosystems. However, if you haven't ridden a bike in a while, or are not comfortable on varied surfaces, it's wise to practice beforehand. The island provides bikes, and the staff is accommodating, but a little pre-trip practice can significantly enhance your enjoyment and independence. For those less comfortable on bikes, relying on guided tours is a great alternative to still see the island.
Beyond biking, walking and hiking are essential for immersing yourself in the island's tranquility. The trails wind through maritime forests, along marshes, and lead to secluded beaches. Remember to wear appropriate footwear, like hiking boots or sturdy walking shoes, as the terrain can be uneven.
The Little St. Simons Island Ecosystem: Bugs and All
To make the most of your visit, proactive preparation is key. Many guests recommend pre-treating hiking and outdoor clothing with permethrin before arriving. Wearing long sleeves, long pants, and a hat is highly advised, even in warmer weather, to create a physical barrier. High-percentage DEET bug spray is also a must-have. The facility provides bug spray and even net suits, which can be invaluable if the insects are particularly bothersome.
Despite the presence of bugs, reviews consistently state that they do not ruin the experience if you are prepared. The overwhelming beauty and unique opportunities for nature immersion on Little St. Simons Island far outweigh the minor inconvenience of insects for most visitors. Embracing the wild means accepting its inhabitants.
A Culinary Journey: Farm-to-Table on the Island
Given the island's remote location, deliveries are limited to a few days a week, and storage space is finite. This makes advance communication of dietary needs absolutely essential. Whether you have allergies, follow a specific diet (vegetarian, vegan, etc.), or have other preferences, informing the resort well before your arrival allows the kitchen to plan and prepare accordingly. This ensures you can enjoy the full culinary experience without compromise.
While the emphasis is on fresh ingredients, some guests note that the meals can lean towards comforting, hearty dishes. If you have very specific health-food requirements, it's worth discussing this with the staff to see how they can best accommodate your preferences within their menu structure. Overall, the food is a significant draw, contributing to the unique and pampered eco-resort experience.
